HELP ME, PLEASE.What\'s the best liquid primer?

....I\'m not having any luck with liquid primers for metal miniatures and I can\'t prime outside at the moment. ...Hell, I can\'t even find my car for all the snow!!

I\'ve tried two different kinds from the local craft store and they stink!! Does anyone know of a tried and true, liquid primer that holds up to acrylic paints? I\'d be most appreciative for any advise sent my way.

I haven\'t used liquid primers for a very long time but the only thing I can realy suggest is Humbrol enamel either white or black to your taste the only problem is that they need turps to thin and clean brushes but I don\'t think that the smell is too bad if memory serves.
You may also like to consider using Tamiya colours and I think they even do a liquid primer I would recommend getting there acrylic thinner if you take that road as they are labelled as acrylic but there is definately something in them that is different from other acrylics.
When I do prime by hand though I usually use GW black or white the trouble is that they don\'t always take very well to the mini and I end up going back over them 2 or 3 times. HTH.

wow i read that wrong... thought he was tryin to strip the mini... liquid primers? nev heard of em ???

I use Reaper brush on white for every mini I do, it seems to work ok, or at least I\'m used to it.

Vallejo brush on primer works fine for me as long as I wash the figure first to get rid of any release agent.

I second the Vallejo brush-on primer (well, at least the Model Color one, Foundation White, since that\'s all I\'ve tried). I usually do two really thin coats of this stuff, allowing it to dry for at least an hour between coats.

Washing minis is absolutely vital, too. I usually wash my models twice: first as soon as I get them out of the blister, and again after I\'ve assembled them and they\'re ready for priming. The first wash helps get rid of all the mold release agents, and that actually helps any gluing. The second time is to get rid of the oils from my fingers from handling it through all the filing and fitting. ;)

I use folkart glass and tile medium as a brush on primer. Usually I use a praycan of metal primer so brush on primer is jsut for touch-ups and when I can\'t be bothered with a spray-can. :)

I personally spray everything, but I\'m told the Vallejo brush on is very nice and thus I\'m being force fed some by Tab Studios on here in order to try it out.

Heck, she was right on the \'magic wash\' ..

That\'s funny, I tried vallejo brush on and and really did not like it. It felt too \"smooth\" and paint didn\'t seem to stick on it very well at all...???

Oh, thank you everybody....

...for taking time to respond. I\'ve ruined a very expensive figure with bad primer and I\'d rather have Too smooth rather than gritty!:eek:)

I\'ve ordered some brush-on Reaper primer and will try to salvage my minis, after they come out of the Pinesol! :(

I think by smooth I ment almost glossy, and when I painted over it, the paint felt like it was slipping around over it. Am I the only one with this problem with the brush on vallejo? ???

And now my game store stopped carrying reaper paints, so I can\'t just head over there when I get low :(

Wacky. I\'ve not experienced that kind of smoothness with the Vallejo primer. Yeah, it\'s a little smoother than my spray primer, but not so much as to be a problem.

Maybe you got a batch that\'s going bad? Make sure to shake the living hell out of it. ;)

I usually thin the Vallejo primer down just a touch so it flows easier. Of course, I make sure to use distilled water here (and for almost all my thinning). I typically slap two coats on, and I haven\'t had a problem yet.

The old GW Smelly primer was great, so you might want to try Coat\'d\'Arms paint primer (same as old GW).

Used it for years, then discovered Halfords (UK) matt sprays.

I had the same problem the first few times I used the Vallejo primer, but I realized it was because I was thinning with flow release/water and not just water. It works fine for me now that I thin with just water.

I believe, however, that she was implying brush-on primers as opposed to those liquid ones intended to be applied with the aid of an aerosol atomizing propellant

Try rolling your mini around in solid primer and see what happens...
