Help needed as I know my mini is crap

Well, this is the mini that I want some help on.

Crap mini

Basically, I was trying to do the shading thing and buggered it up completely. any help on how to improve the definition of the armour would be appreciated. I alson only noticed how incredibly bad it was once I looked at it on the PC screen. Thought it was passable before.

Also, for those who looked at the squad I posted previously, I have managed to get a better pic of the warlock, which can be found here

Now that you can actually see the mini, any comments would be appreciated.

My main advice would be to keep working at it! Once the shading goes on, particularly if it is a wash, the mini will often look bad (at least mine do lol). Go back with your original basecoat color and start picking out the higher areas. This will help make those low lying areas appear darker. I remember when I first used a GW flesh wash and thinking \"Jeez this looks bad!\". Just go back over the raised area with your base color. Don\'t forget to dilute the base color a bit.

The thing that jumps out at me is the flesh wash. It looks like it was just used straight out of the bottle. I would recommend thinning it, otherwise you are going to have a very shiny look to the recesses of the skin (between the fingers in this case). But it will look better once you get your base color applied over the washed area again.

One thing that will improve the impression of the armour is when you paint details on or surrounding it in contrasting colours. Paint the tubing black with some grey highlights, for instance, and paint symbols and such in some nice cintrasting colour (red?). That will make it look better instantly.

I tried a wash for the shading on the armour. Unfortuneately, I think the wash wasn\'t dilute enough.

This is the first time I have tried anything like this so any advice will be helpful.

To be honest, the armour is the best, and most easily recoverable part! Paint highlights onto it using bone or a bone/leather mix. Keep highlighting up to pure bone/white. The blue looks gloopy. Water it down slightly and apply lots of even coats. Try going over it in a slightly lighter blue, and then washing it with the colour you have used. Don\'t add detail work until you have the largest, main areas done - the chain and icon will obviously need painting again.

Practice getting the paint into the right places neatly. Thinned paint will work its own way into nooks and crannies as long as you don\'t put too much on the model. Post another pic later on so we can see how you\'re doing!!

What size brushes do you mainly use? Some people can paint anything with the mammoth brushes but I have to use some of the smallest to get along the borders. It also helps me apply the washes exactly how I want them.

John Boy may be on to your problem. Are you using the red handled brushes from GW?

It also looks like you are overloading the brush and it is getting away from you when you touch the mini.

For washes & inks, go search \"magic wash\". There are lots of formulas to thin your stuff with (and a thread recently on it.)

Watch out for washes! I counted on them a lot early on, but have mostly given them up. Try to simulate the effect with paint tones. And trust me and the others on this forum invest in some good bruches that hole a good point ( i.e. not GW brushes). Keep working at it, read the excellent articles on this site and you will suprised how quickly you see improvement in the results!
