Hi there , I don't post very often
So I have a few questions for all of you knowledgable people out there

I am struggling with object lighting ( you know where the light from a illuminated object brightens the model ) I read the article on it here and it was as clear as mud , is there a easier way to do this

How on earth do I achieve a muted look on a model , yet have it remain bright .. I tried matt mixing medium and although I am happy with my efforts I am not achieving the look I want ...sorry to be vague , I'm sure there's a " official" name to this technique

Can anyone suggest how I would paint discolorations on rotted flesh , like rotting blotches and such nastiness ....which is the best way to highlight rotting flesh without it looking too white

Hope someone can help

OSL. Take the main color of your light source and glaze that onto the area where it hits the mini in several washes getting brighter and stronger the closer you get to the light source. If you want to make your life bit easier and you can plan it out, try highlighting the area where the light will hit a bit brighter than the rest of the mini (even all the way to white if you so desire) and the glaze will seem stronger or more saturated. The effect will vary based on the opacity of the color you are using for the osl and how dark the color you are putting it over is. As for the rotting stuff, I still have trouble with that so hopefully someone else can help you. It always looks too clean and artificial when I paint decayed skin.

Hi Hamlet,

As for the discolorations on rotting flesh. I have had good luck by sealing my models in a clear coat with a flat finish. Later I come back to the model and brush a bit of gloss clear coat directly onto details I wish to seem like weeping necrotic flesh or oozing puss filled sores. a tiny bit of a glaze in the colors of your sores might achieve the same effect. Not really sure if I am explaining this well.

I wish you the best of luck with your painting,

Ronin

Right blood pools at lowest points of a corpse (Lividity) so an animated one will show darkerpatches around the ankles, but skin will show yellowish patches where body fat shows through the overlying skin.
Rot/Decay can be depicted with Flesh tone mixed with a Sage green an applied in careful thin washes, for early stages, traces of Purple and or Black for later.

For a muted look, try mixing white with your base coat to have washed out highlights. To shade, add black to the base coat. This will stop the colours from being too bright but you can still lighten them. This looks pretty effective for sun bleached clothing
