It seems as if the painter used layering to highlight them. Apply a couple of layers of thinned down paint with a slightly lighter tone than the base coat on the raised areas. Mix a slightly lighter paint and then repeat the process, oonly cover a smaller area than with the previous mix. Repeat until you are satisfied with the result.
The lesser difference in tone for each step the smoother your transition will be, but the more layers you will need.
Remember to keep your paint fairly thin so you don\'t build up a rough surface. It\'s better to apply a couple of layers with the same mix and keep the surface smooth than to apply one thick layer and get the surface all rough and grainy.
You can use the same method for shading the recessed areas. I would keep the paint even thinner then, though. And apply several layers until I\'ve achieved a fairly soft transition to a darker shade.
Hope this helps!
EDIT: And, for the record, I used my 5000th post to something useful!
