help painting black hair

could really use some pointers on this, i have tried doing it several times but its not working despite reading a few articles on it. the hair in question is sculpted in blocks rather than lots of thin strands.
so any one got a recipe i could try? (gw paints if poss)

the trick is not the colour but the way you highlight. don\'t highlight in a standard way, look at what hair looks like. irl i takes on a sort of halo:

Lots of fine paint strokes in the direction of the hair works. Codex grey will work, or Shadow grey for a blue hue.

But make the brush do the work, fine strokes will do it.. A brush with a good point helps too.

A couple of months ago there was a thread about using flesh tones to highlight black (I think it was Ritual who suggested this...) I\'ve tried this a couple of times lately for black hair and liked it better than the off-white I\'d been using previously.

freak is absolutely correct that the placement of highlights (and shadows in non-black hair) is critical to getting the look of hair. Don\'t worry about strands at all, what you really want is more horizontal bands of light/dark with light wherever there\'s a curve that turns up (crown of the head, curls that flip up). It\'s similar to NMM in that the juxtaposition of light and dark near to one another helps create the shine, but generally not quite as extreme as NMM.

I found it pretty hard to ignore the strands when I first started practicing on hair and it took me a good while to think of it as a surface and work on the horizontal highlights and forget about the strands. (As a last step you can go in with your shadow or darkest colour and pick out a few main strands to create locks of hair.)

I haven\'t yet posted pictures of the figs with black hair, but there are some dark brown hair figs in my gallery. Paintminion is a wiz at hair, so it\'s worth a look at her gallery, also.

Oops, I left something out. Where I say \'horizontal bands\', I mean the bands of light and dark go horizontally across the head, not vertically like strands. BUT, you paint them like donga says, with fine vertical strokes.
