Help painting blood angels, really having trouble.

The dread is primed chaos black, red areas are done in two coats of mechrite red for a solid colour, this is the easy part for me, next i try to put blood red down. The colours right but look at the state of the paint. Can anyone give me some help or advice on paint job. This is getting me down.....

Put in the red in successive steps, adding it to merchrite red. Blood red is a tricky colour, probably my least favourite colour from the Citadel line. In this state I suggest just to add more thin layers till you have a solid colour.

Try undercoating the areas to be red in something reddish that covers better; in a pinch a grey will do. Then when you've obscured or mostly obscured the black you can start laying on the layers of the final red colour with less of a coverage problem.

I use a micture of blood red and dark flesh as my base. I got that off the GW Eavy Metal masterclass on painting the Space Hulk termies. A 50:50 mix of the two thinned down with the same amout of water as paint tends to need about 3 to 4 thin coats to cover black. I then build up blood red from there.

Trouble is you can still see the undercoat which may be impeding the look of the blood red you're trying to apply. Dont be surprised if it takes 4-5 coats aswell ;)

For a bright red under coat white then yellow then topcoat red

Personally I undercoat black (as that will be the colour of the darkest parts) and working on each section at a time try to blend through from black to a spot of white then wash in Baal red, its very time consuming, but I like the results.

giving a model a basecoat of something with a red hue to it is a very good tip, Dark Flesh is a good base for red, using the foundation paint Mechrite red is also a good starting point, red is one of the most difficult colours to master I think and I still struggle even now.
