Help painting this Dark Red (Farseer by Martin Footit)

Greetings,

I\'ve been trying to find a good way of painting dark red for years now, and I finally spotted THE perfect look I want to achieve. I believe the guy who painted it is called Martin Footit, but that\'s only a mildly informed guess.

I can\'t seem to get the image to upload at the minute, so here\'s a link.

Can anyone recommend what colours to use and how to paint this? Any help would be greatly appreciated. I\'ve tried a couple of models but they\'ve not come out in the deep, dark red like this.

Thanks again!
All the best,

:D

First off Welcome to the Coolminiornot forums!

Personally I start with Citadel Blood Red mixed 50/50 with Chaos black and layer upward from there. That give you a very dark colour to start. You would have to ask Martin himself as suggested to know exactly what was used on this mini though.

You can check my gallery for my latest Griffon Templar to see how my reds turn out. I personally really like the way they look but others think they go too dard in the shadows. I can give more info if you want it then.

Red is one of those colours which the gods didn\'t want us to paint unfortunately.
You could try pming him like Cleezy suggested but i don\'t think he\'s around a lot.
It\'s quite a dark red so try experimenting there abouts and from what i can see he\'s highlighted it with flesh colours ie. adding dwarf flesh/elf flesh to the mix. Not oranges. It\'s just a case of experimenting with different mixes.
Hope I could help. :D

Necrotales has a good tutorial on reds that might help.

You also might want to try the Crimson Red from the revamped Reaper Pro Paint line. A very deep and rich dark red.

Thanks for the help guys.

I\'ve sent Mr F. a message, but he\'s not replied yet. In fact I\'ve sent a fair few people messages and none of them have replied.

I\'ll keep trying out different ways of painting the red, including those suggested here.

Does anyone know where these colours come from? Someone suggested them, but I can\'t find the maker; Plaid Maroon, Plaid Black and Plaid Cardinal Crimson?

Thanks,

Based on those names, I would guess the company is Plaid, and those are colours from Plaid.

Could be these guys: http://www.plaidonline.com/

Hi guys, sorry about my slow reply only just noticed this as I was on holiday last week.

I\'ll try & remember how I painted the red. I painted the farseer over a black undercoat! - I always prefer to highlight up. I think the basecoat was a mix of chaos black + scab red + a little bit of scorched brown. Highlighting up adding more scab red, then red gore, then a bit of blood red, some fiery orange & lastly elf flesh? Finally adding a glaze or two of either red &/or purple ink?

Hope this helps!
Martin.

When I've done red (which is a lot lately), I've been mixing dark angels green and blood red to make a dark maroon, and working up to pure blood red for the last shade. It makes for a darker red, with no hint of orange.

Plaid's paints are very transparent. Also, buyer beware. The quality can be very inconsistent from shade to shade as well. Many of the shades have a fairly course pigment grind, while others can be quite smooth.

If you want to go the rout of cheap "craft" paints, try Delta Ceramcoat. The pigment grind is much more consistent. Just avoid the metallic paints.
