Since I can\'t access Myspace from work and don\'t want to create a Myspace account (via Home) I can\'t check it out.

However, please be aware that there have been a number of SCAMS carried out using this kind of Knee Jerk/ Heartstring Tugging reaction.
At work we get dozens of security warnings a week on similar kinds of things. Some have been blatent attempts to raise/scrounge cash. Other have been just attempts to arrange/ increase website hits for what ever reason.

I might well be considered cynical and jaundiced on my view on this but I am somewhat suspicious about any such attention seeking, especially as I doubt that many 5 year olds will actually understand what Myspace is about.

I\'ve had a look at his myspace site and it appears it\'s his dad\'s and his.

Here\'s the explanation for those that cannot access the site.

\" JAMES AND DADDY\'s Blurbs
About me:
Why the one million friends challenge I get asked the questions, Why 1 million friends? What will it achieve? on a regular basis so i thought i would try to explain. James and I used to come onto myspace to listen to music and look at the videos just before he was diagnosed and added a few friends. When James was diagnosed and we came to terms with the fact that his cancer and its treatment was going to take over our lives we needed a distraction and the \"James and Daddy\" page was born. I asked James if he thought we could get one hundred friends and then one thousand and the ten thousand. When we reached ten thousand friends i asked James to set the next target. James said ONE MILLION. We will gain nothing financially from this page but have gained friendship from people around the world and we have shared our story with you all and in return shared your stories. This page has helped us as a family deal with the tough times and share the good times. Now as a father i feel i have to achieve this challenge as i made a vow to James the day after he was born that i would never let him down and i would only make him a promise if i could keep it. So there you have it, the reason for the challenge and why i need you to help me get more friends. We have tried the celebrity route with minor success so all we can do is keep sending out the bulletins and searching out the profiles that have loads of friends and big hearts.\"

Have to admit, my first reaction was about the same as DR\'s... but in giving it a (very) brief glance-over, it looks like it might actually be legit. There\'s the explanation Roger quoted, a bunch of music and videos I\'d imagine the kid liking, like Star Wars all over the place, and no pitches or pleas for money anywhere. And tucked away, non-descriptly with nothing to even call attention to them, are a couple text-only links directly to the pages of some legitimate leukemia research charities.

I\'m not sure I completely buy it, but then again, I don\'t see what it could hurt either. As I see it, there are two possible scenarios here:

1. This is some teenager/adult with no life just trying to see if he can get 1MM \'friends\' on myspace and going about it in a really tasteless way. -- If this is the case, then worst case scenario is this guy gets his jollies but there\'s no harm to us for participating.

2. It\'s legit. -- In which case we\'ve helped put a smile on the faces of a father and son in a devastating situation and created a memory for them that will last the rest of that father\'s life. The kid gets to meet his goal of 1MM friends (which does sound like the goal of a five year old) and the father just gets the satisfaction of seeing a happy little boy, despite the circumstances.

IMO, it\'s a pretty favorable risk/reward trade-off. :)

I will point out though that the address of the myspace page isn\'t one that I\'d expect after reading that story. I\'ll participate, but I\'m wondering if this is going to turn out to be some sort of viral marketing scheme. In which case the marketers deserve to a special place in a particularly hot neighborhood in hell.

My first reaction too. I was on another website and got a HEARTWRENCHING message......someone in desperate straits, just looking for a friend. Felt bad doing it but before I responded I sent a copy to the admin. and was told that yes, it was a scam..............wish I could reach thru the net connection and wring his neck. Wrecks it for those who really need help and don\'t get it because people are (legitimately) scared off...:mad::cussing:

Isn\'t there a listing of scam pages found out, somewhere? I\'m sure I saw one, somewhere.

snopes.com usually list all the hoaxes and scams going on and stays very current. I didn\'t see anything.

I also had the first impression it wasn\'t legit. I have a my space account but never use it really and have it hidden..just to avoid the 100\'s of daily add attempts by spammers, wanna bee porn stars, web cam girls, escorts and people trying to install Trojans on my pc with malicious ad ons. My space has in my opinion become a big joke.

I use Face book on a regular occasion, bit it to is becoming littered with junk. Ive had one attempt at a version of the Nigerian oil/bank scam on Face book now.
