Help with Glazes

Hey Everyone, i've just recently started getting into more advanced painting methods, and one of the methods I've been working on is glazing. i just had a few questions on general stuff

-When i make my glaze should i make it in my wet palette or should i make it in a well palette?
-To make smooth transitions should i layer paint on first and then use glazes to smooth the transition?

Any other help and pointers would be a lot of help! thank you!!

Hello Dashyl,

You can do it either way, but if you make it on the wet palette you'll need to make a smaller amount so it doesn't run all over the place. In a well palette you can make more of it but will want to make sure you mix it up periodically because pigments will settle out or separate.

Your methods will vary somewhat after practicing for a bit, but yes you have the basic idea, layer on first and glaze to ease the transition.

Good luck,
Zach

For the first, it depends on your choice. I use a well pallette (a water colour pallette) and it does me ok. Some swear by wet pallettes. I have used both and prefer the well pallette but a wet pallette is handy for keeping certain mixes ready to go for some time. Handy also if you say have only an hour to paint and dont want to waste half of it setting up you rig. Just pull the pallette out, water on brush and off you go.

Either. If you're making up a small amount you'd be best doing it in a wet palette. If you need a large quantity then it might be best to do it in a well.

Although glazes can be useful to even out transitions that didn't end up as smooth as you wanted, smooth transitions don't require glazing - it is possible to paint where you don't need to do this.

When glazing load the brush lightly and apply just a thin veil.
