help with my paints (naked lady pics)

ok so there are no naked ladies (feel free to add them though)

basically, after having read this article i really felt the need to give oils a go. so i bought a basic set of colours and some flesh tone (because being colour blind, there is NO WAY i could mix it myself!!). had a go today at a cloak and i have to say that it totally sucks. the paint is streaky and doesn\'t blend well. it covers quite thickly or just wipes off. anyone got any ideas? i shall post pics tomorrow (when its dry - hopefully the paint fairies will have sorted it by then)

heh the reason i never have bothered with oils, it\'s a whole new skill set to learn. :(

oils need a lot of mixing on a pallette. or a lot of mixing on the canvas. either way they don\'t mix by themselves.

oil paint holds it\'s shape well. you\'ll need to thin them a fair bit i reckon. plus use brushes that limit streaking.

that wiping off is a valid method from what i\'ve heard. cover the area and wipe the excess off and you have instant shading. proabably takes ages to master that trick too. :|~

to dry it fast and continue just hit it with some dullcote/varnish. you should ba able to paint over that almost immediately.

i guess it\'s a simple case of persevere like all things in this hobby.

Freak: Last time I used Oil paints was well before you were born. So my advice might not be all that good.:D

If I remember correctly you can thin Oils down with Artists linseed oil and this will help you to do \"wet\" blending.
But a number of the articles I\'ve read lately indicate that Burnt Sienna and Titanium pWhite are the two main colours used in flesh tones. Shadow areas are darken\'d and toned using blues or purples.

Of all people Einion would have been the best person to give advice on this but he\'s dropped out of the scene, more\'s the pity.

now you mention it, i don\'t remember hearing from him for a while. shame. right linseed oil it is. i think the wiping off thing works ok, i kinda discovered it yesterday by mistake, only it revealed the primer. if a decent base coat was added, it could be helpful.....

Having followed the Rolf on Art series on the BBC oils can take upto 6 months to dry correctly before you can apply any varnish

Oils can be great if you know the tricks:cool:.I am an enamels man with my military models, but a lot of the top guys use oils .Trick 1, put the paint onto paper 2-3 hours before using,it lets a lot of the oil drain out .Trick 2, when finished stick it in the oven or a hot pot, that cuts down the drying time dramatically. You need to chek out the M.M sites for details of temperatures & times. GOD bless ............VINCENTI lol

yeah, as Vincenti says;

also, you need to undercoat with acylics - VMC will be best because you need a very matt undercoat; that will also absorb some of the oils from the paint

Put the paint on, and then with a clean dry brush, remove the paint. Again and again until you have almost just stained the undercoat. That basecoat is now ready for highlights and blending, and can be worked for sometime. Just don\'t add paint too thick.

Final tip; flesh colour stright from the tube is invariably awful and looks false, and it is quite easy to mix a flesh colour (honest guv). Yellow Ochre, burnt sienna and white and you\'re there, maybe a teeny touch of red to liven it up. try it with acrylics and you\'ll see. The historical guys will never use fleah colour striaght from the tube.

Hardy Tempest (he WAS on here) is one of the new wave of oil users - he tends to use them in glazes in an almost acrylic technique, and also creates texture using the natural character of oils Hardy\'s site go to \"in progress 90mm\" and you\'ll see undercoat with painted areas next to it.

good luck!

thanks for that link. i am going to have another go. it has dried better, it\'s only the texture thats the problem, but that\'ll be ok if i thin them. can you use brake fluid on oils?!!

if you look under arm pits, she has some slight swelling. this is an indication of swollen axillary lymph nodes which suggest breast cancer. what an informative thread

and ogrebane this is for you:

Note to self - View more threads that Orb posts in. There was the link to the cool Mig Jimenez models a little while ago, and now Hardy Tempest\'s amazing stuff. The textures on the Hospitaller Bust are scarrily amazing! I don\'t think oils are for me though, I\'m just not patient enough.

:( Too bad... But, I have a feeling he\'ll get back into minis some day... I have decided to stop painting several times already... and here I am! :innocent:

think you\'re right Ritual...........I\'m sure he\'ll be back (you don\'t invest so many years in something just to totally drop it).

I\'ve never given it up as such, but certainly left it for extended periods
