it\'s all determined by how long it takes you and what you need to earn to pay the bills mate.
the pound is still to strong for uk painters to be competitive unfortunately.
don\'t lower your earning potential just to paint for a company, too many painters get screwed by that.

bein\' a freelance painter can be a real trade-off...the money seems like less than for a studio painter on salary, but it probably works out to be more per single mini...
for single minis, the average rate has been $40 per 32mm mini, and then about the same amount in free minis...then i turn around and sell the minis...
this is not a very good rate, but ya gotta pay your dues...havin\' your name on the pics in the webstore, or bein\' published in rulebooks is what will drive up demand for your work...
companies are always gonna try and pay the lowest rate possible, but exposure and swag almost makes up for it...

And I say never, get paid in metal. You\'ll end up with that reputation and other companies will want to pay you in metal or a mix of metal and cash.

A good rule of thumb is $10/hour. So try and guesstimate how many hours it would take you to paint each mini and multiply it by $10.
That\'s a fair asking price as it\'s not only your materials but your time.

in my personal experience, companies don\'t ask what ya wanna get paid, and then haggle...they say, here\'s what we want painted, and here\'s what we\'re willin\' to pay...sometimes it all cash(on average, about $75 for a 32mm mini), sometimes it\'s cash and minis(average about $40-$45 plus a load of swag), sometimes companies offer pure trade(which is not worth it)...
my choice to take a job pretty much depends on how much i like the line of minis, the bosses, and how much exposure the job is gonna give me...
at the start, the exposure was my main concern...nowdays, i only do private commissions, and don\'t pick up a brush for less than $150...gettin\' published in rulebooks, winnin\' a daemon, and bein\' in online stores has given me enough of a brand name to be able to ask that kind of price...5 years ago, hardly anybody knew who i was, so i had to take what was offered...

fully understand what your saying Yah, but more and more comapnies are wanting higher quality nowadays for less.
private commisions are the only way to go for a full time painter nowadays unless they get a regular wage from a company.

A very tricky one..lol.. I have been paid very well for commissions, even by well by one company, then see an advert for a UK model selling site who would only pay peanuts.
As an illustrator who has done all kinds, freelance and company work, it is near impossible to put an hourly rate on a figure. For the skills you have £10 per hour is nothing these days even cheap as a house decorator etc, but as a miniature painter spending say 20 hours on a figure..people wont pay.. unless you are in the top 50 on CMON.. then you may be lucky.
All boils done to is it a living? or the Qudos of painting un-released miniatures?
