Help with roman numerals?

I\'ve always found it amazing that the Romans were able to build aquaducts and the Collosseum with their numbering system. After all, without converting to our decimal system, how does one multiply XVII with MCCXIV?

BTW
For anyone not wanting to write code for a conversion prog, you can use the =ROMAN() function in excel.

In the wikipedia entry it mentioned that the Romans used decimals mostly and had to come up with a system for fractions (for coins, etc).

Then, you\'ve got this arithmetic entry to teach you some math using Roman numerals.

In all, looks like a right smart pain in yer backside. Gee, wonder why its not used anymore!

...erm...well...you see... Ok, Yes!!! But, given the average age of an Eastbourne Councillor, it seemed most appropriate

How the Romans could build aqueducts and bridges that you can still drive cars across (and they didn\'t even use mortar) and at the same time have such a stupid numeric system escapes me. ??? But then, they DID coat their water pipes with lead, so I guess they were a bit stupid after all! lol Just good at building things...

Then again there are people even now who use inches, feet, pounds, gallons and other imperial/non metric units
