Henchwoman

Hey guys, I\'ve been painting this henchwoman, and I just tried doing some checkers. As you can see, they didn\'t turn out that great. I\'d love some tips on how to do \'em better, or whether I should scrap them or not.
Thanks..:)

I\'m halfway through painting this one myself and hadnt thought of putting checks on. So I will shamelessly (sp?) nick your idea and add them to my one.

Dont scrap the checks they look great on the model. Not really much idea on how to make them better apart from enlarging the white squares so the black squares touch at the corners better. At the moment they look like a series of white squares on a black background. Hope that is helpful.

Okay, sounds good. So I\'ll try and smooth them out then. I was dreading the thought of someone telling me to scrap them, \'cause they took too bloody long to finish to do that to them.

Any other comments, suggestions, etc. while the pic is here? The scroll that she\'s holding will be painted like her full-body scroll, her hair will be black, and her little collar thing will be copper. Suggestions?

I tried a new bone mix for it, and I think it worked well....It was basically just a miz of Graveyard Earth that was highlighted up to Bleached Bone and then Skull White. I tried for an almost senmm look, just because the scroll had some fairly sharp folds, and it worked okay. The darker parts on the bottom of the horizon line were started from a mix of Graveyard and Scorched Brown, while the upper half of the horizon was based with a mix of Graveyard and Bleached bone.
I think next time I\'ll try starting it at a bit lighter shade, but other than that, I like the effect.

Ignore me Nelson. You wont know what I am on about...I hope;)

Man, I\'ve just been studying her, and does anybody else notice a resemblence to a blow-up doll? :D

EDIT: Shit, I..am...a...fecking...mind reader! Seriously, believe me guys, I was typing this before I had seen Steve\'s post. I saw he was replying on the \"Who\'s online\" thing, and I just started to think \"What would Steve see in it?\"

True, and as a teen, I must uphold the very basic values of pervertdom, as not doing so would be letting down my dear friends and classmates.

The mouth is really the biggest resemblance, although her spectacles really give her that bug-eyed look found in so many inflatable girlfriends.

Errmmm....back on track, can anyone give me some more tips/suggestions?

Looking at the model, I imagine it might be a bit of a paint to tape it off, but it would probably be worth it for the ease of painting the checkers afterwards.

Had I been you, I would have probably based in black/white. Taped down the cuff/sleeve/whatever that is. So you\'d have a vertical piece of tape covering half the cuff/sleeve and another piece of tape covering the mini or the outside of the sleeve depending which half you covered. Then I\'d paint the other colour in horizontal brush strokes on the exposed half in between the 2 pieces of vertical tape.

Um...if that makes sense then good. In your case you\'d have to place the tape edge between the squares already painted I suppose. Anyway, after you do one side, let it dry, if it needs another coat give it a go, let it dry, then when you\'re happy with one dry side remove and repeat on the other side.

I dont know how flat that surface is, but even if it\'s fairly uneven you can do this just so you have a guide. You can get painters masking tape, which you\'d probably want to use, it has a low tac so it wont rip the paint off the mini, at DIY type shops, paint stores, art stores etc. Can get it down to a 1/4 inch width around here. I\'d suggest getting one that\'s labelled as \"low tac\" just to be safe, some aren\'t so low tac and chunks of paint go missing, some hardly stick to the wall under their own weight.

I think she needs big red lips and dark purple eyeshadow \")

Hmmm.

I love the I symbol and the red bits, especially the pouch. The scroll looks a little flat in the pic.

Whats uo with her face, the skin is very green, makes her look like a nurgle follower.

Right...

I always paint the non black color first as you can lay down some nice highlighting first and then paint the black squares/diamonds. Also, when painting small shapes, you want to be working with very thin paint and chaos black is really pigment heavy and covers really well even when very thin.

Tips for patterns:

1) (Especially for larger diamonds/squares) Plan first how many will be used to cover the surface. Again, you’ll want to plan carefully so you get something that works.

2) Making sharp corners: turn the figure a lot as you paint the pattern so that you are (as much as possible) drawing the brush towards your body as you make line. (start at the corner and draw the brush away from the corner)

3) Make your first cut at the pattern as neat as you can, but don’t obsess about perfection. If you can make tight corners right away, go for it, otherwise just block out the basic shapes and then add the corners second. After all the blocks are in the right places, get your contrast color out and tidy up any lines. Usually you have at least one more tidy up session with the black before you are finished.

4) Make your patterns meet at places that won’t easily be seen (if at all). You will most likely have less than perfect joins at the point where the pattern wraps back upon itself. Put these where they won’t be noticed.

5) Here’s the tip that separates good looking patterns from stuff that looks like somebody has paint on their clothes: Highlight your lil’ squares. Sounds tedious, but it really doesn’t take much time and really makes the things look good. A little lighter shade (I’d recommend at least two highlights, but I’m a bit of a nutcase ) here and there on the squares, on the edges, in the middle, whatever seems best makes a BIG difference in the finished look.

The key points (for me anyway) to painting general little freehand stuff on figures are:

1) Keep what you are painting simple. Don\'t paint the thing to accurately (its too small) paint an \"icon\" that people will recognize as the thing, i.e. decide what the \"distinguishing characteristics\" are that make people recognize a particular thing.
2) Lay your colors down in groups. As I mentioned above...do all the first color, then the next, then touch up mistakes, then finish.
3) Keep your paint thin! This is crucial both for ease of applying the paint and also for painting over any mistakes that you might make.

Hope this helps

Thanks a lot Dave!

@Trevor, I think its this angle that makes her face looke green...I did use a bit of green to shade her face, and all you really see from this angle is the crevices...I don\'t have my tripod with me, so I can\'t get a better angle, but believe me, the rest of her face is a bit less green. :)

I would whole heartedly agree on this....

For a while during college I worked at a \'shop\' that sold that sort of thing...It is amazing how many people buy those for \'gag\' gifts or \'buying this for friends...\'

onto Nelson....It does look great so far....Good work Young Lumberjack..

You didn\'t get any female customers trying to buy your thermos flask did you?

(That probably refers to a highly obscure comedy sketch which only I have seen....)

Basically..... a couple of girls are in a sex shop and looking through the BOBs as they range from the tiny to the enormous. One of them then sees this gigantic tartan BOB and attempts to buy it. Upon which the salesman says, \"I am sorry Madam but that is my thermos flask\":D

I never experimented with inflatable girlfriends...I was tempted however, as I reckoned it would take a lot less puff to get one of them \'in the mood\' than I expended on the real thing. Having my eardrums replaced with one-way pneumatic valves helped enormously however:D

I bet you used to sell those \"for a friend\", right?lol

Nelson - I would suggest not using anything sharp when you hold her....

Oh, talking about the mini, right...gotta go!

ahem...

Yes, i only sold them on behalf of a friend...

Sad thing is, I also worked on a \'commission\' so it was in my best interests to be as helpful as I could...

It is funny how jaded you get with those sorts of things....

I remember there was also some particular dirty novels you could buy, and one was entitled \"MY MOM AND ME\"...after a while the only thing that crossed my mind when seeing that title is that it should have read \"MY MOM AND I\"....

And I didn\'t even TOUCH the whole \"gag\" gift portion of your message even though I was looking at the pic of the mini the whole time!

Apologies to those of you who might have been offended...I\'m evidently in a \"mood\" today!:innocent::moon:
