Heroes for Wargames

Yesterday, I stopped at my local facilitator\'s, just in my way to get some spray primer, and ended up with about a quarter pound of pewter in my pockets.

As I trudged home, loaded with my purchases, I was thinking about how I got to this sad, sad state. Then I came and checked the forums, and a post from Sturmhalo suddenly gave the answer.

I HOLD STUART PARKINSON , THE AUTHOR OF THE BOOK \"HEROES FOR WARGAMES\", RESPONSIBLE FOR MY ADDICTION TO SMALL PEWTER FIGURINES...

How many of you had fallen into the clutches of this terrible addiction on account of that accursed grimoire?

Yup, it\'s a good book. Even if it was a huge ad for GW! There\'s some really nice painting in it, and some bloody terrible painting (remember the Judge dredd figures!?). Didn\'t get me into figures and painting but it sure as hell put me on the straight and narrow with regards my technique!

:D

Yep, the Grimoire

Yes... Some outstanding paintjobs. The Eternal Champions were always my favorites, and that cutaway dungeon diorama!!! Cool.

Well, I had to go and dig it out to check! I certainly remember being inspired by this book, but looking at it right now, and comparing it to the images available on this site, it is not so impressive. If this tome inspired us, then the future for miniature painting looks very rosy indeed \'cos an awful lot more people will access this site than than ever read HFW and hopefull become inspired in their turn.

I cut my teeth on the more accurately named Wargames Illustrated and Miniature Wargames. The standard of the former remains unparalleled amongst historical gamers - all you UK folks should recognize those 2 eh?
Did GW ever do historicals? and were they the same as Citadel? one owned the other or verse visa?

Familiar magazines indeed. Though in the case of Wargames Illustrated at least, not much of a showcase for well painted minis!

Yup, GW (or more accurately, Citadel) did do some historics back in the mists of time! Can\'t remember what they were but I\'m sure they\'re listed on www.solegends.com. I guess they went under the Citadel name.

Originally GW and Citadel were seperate entities. GW a games store and Citadel a miniatures company set up by Brian Ansell (Foundry head honcho now) using money from GW (I think). Along the way they kinda became full on bed fellows and ended up as one and the same. Strange how these days no one seems to refer to Citadel Miniatures, it\'s just GW!
