Ive been painting for two years now and made finalist at GD UK 2008 and 2009 and have been told im really good. When i asked how to improve my painting, a member of the eavy metal team said i needed to ditch my GW brushes for instant improvement. He recommended series 7 winsor and newton with kalinsky sable. Ok i thought ill get some straight away, then i saw the price!!!!! However, i have found some brushes designed and manufactured for em4miniatures , iwith kalinsky sable, the prices are far more competitive and accessible. I wanted to know if any of you guys have used them or heard any rave reviews of these brushes, im also ditching GW paints for vallejo game Colour.

As soon as i have figured out a way of getting photos on here i will post some of my work.

Peaceout!

The W&N brushes are, indeed, awesome, but there are ones that are as good, as was just said. Personally, I'm willing to spend the extra money for W&N.
If you take care of them properly, they last a long, long time.
I bought a load of 18, last time I went out, and after a year, I'm still using the first two (different sizes).

I like the Series 7s, myself. They're a bit more expensive, to be sure, but they are much higher quality than I've found with other brushes and they tend to outlast.

Just out of curiosity, what has brought you to the decision to ditch GW paints for Vallejo GC?

I really like the Vallejo Model Color paints because I like the more muted tones and the high opacity, but the Game Color paints seem to be very, very similar to the GW equivalents in most all respects. I could see changing over time, but it seems incongruous to just ditch them while being concerned over the price of brushes. The financial outlay to replace a set of paints can be pretty steep.

Did the 'Eavy Metal guy make this recommendation also?

Model Color really provides for some new and different styles from the game ranges, but they're a pain on handling. They rub off like crazy. You really have be careful with them. They're made for display.

Another vote for Rosemary and Co. Very good for the money.

Also take a look at Pro Arte Renaissance.

W&N are indeed overpriced, but put it into perspective. How many figures do you get out of a brush? I can make a good sable brush last for years and get many figures out of it. When you price the cost per figure, it's insignificant. Top quality brushes are the best investment in your painting you can make, other than time.

GW paint would be ok if you didn't have to remortgage your house to afford it. And it came in halfway decent pots.

:brushwave: GW staff recommending ditching GW products. Says it all really!

Well, the GW brushes have just been steadily getting worse and worse with each incarnation, the reds were quite reasonable, the blues were just passable, providing you didn't want to do anything too clever and the black handles with the coloured tips? Ugh. Don't even think about it.

I replaced all my GW paint (pretty much a full set) in one fell swoop with VGC and Coaties. I took the GW stuff to my local shop and gave it all to a kid who was sat painting. The staff didn't look too impressed but the kid was chuffed :)

For 0 and 1 - get the Series 22, and for the 00, 000 etc the series 33s are fab.

Personally, I'd never recommend anything but R&Co's brushes. I find them absolutely on equal footing to the Series 7s. The S7s are fantastic, but I tend to be fairly rough with my brushes at the best of times, so I certainly get far more bang for my buck!

I also use the WN series 7. I bought mine from Dick Blick art supply. They sometimes have these brushes on sale and they're well worth the money spent.

i went out and bought a single W&N S7 brush some 4 years ago. best 10 euro's i've ever spent
my painting went up quite a bit in one go....

and while i've used the brush on every mini i painted the last 4 years, for anything but the basecoats, i've worn out and replaced all my other brushes twice, while the W&N is still as good as when i bought it....
and i don't take that excellent care of by brushes either....

W&N Cirrus for me. They don't even make these any more yet all of mine are almost as good as the day I bought them.

Also bought some "creative models" cheapo red sable a couple of years back that I intended for use in basic stuff (base coating etc) and to my surprise they are good quality, easily able to handle detail precision work. I believe they were packaged as reaper or vallejo or something.
