HF Kado... and Hello!

I\'ve been lurking around here and the main site for a while now, often with my jaw dropping in awe;) and decided it was about time I got on the forum... so Hello!

I\'ve only been painting about three months, and recently put my first mini on CMoN... I did ask for C/C but didn\'t get any:no:

However, I\'m reliably informed that the good folks here on the forum are very friendly and happy to give adivce, so here\'s my latest offering, which I\'ve also submitted to CMoN.

Any comments, criticism and tips for improving would be very welcome!

Hiya and welcome to the forums!

I love these martial arts figures the more I see them, and from what I can tell you have done a loveley job with this one. The skintones and white robe look spot on! I also like the base too.

Would be nice to see a slightly larger pic so can comment on the smoothness and neatness better but good stuff so far!

Yeah have to agree, it\'s very hard to comment on such a small figure (I\'m old you know and my eyes ain\'t so good no more :D )

The best way to improve is to post in the WIP forum from the very start of a paint job.

Welcome aboard.

Welcome to the Forums ...biggest lesson for me on Coolmini ..The greatest painter in the wold will only get great scores if he is also a great photographer. At the end of the day trying to convey a model on film as it is in real life is an art form in itself...

anyways this looks nice .I love these Hasslefree minis great character to them.
The white looks nicely done the flesh as well.
The base let\'s it down a little.Try a variation of sizes (grades) of grit/sand on the base. and remember to paint a base to the same standard as the rest of the model.
One other thin that may be just the photo is that the whole thing appears a little lumpy in parts..The usual first reply most people get for improving applies to you also. Thinning your paints a little will lead to a lot smoother job.
Overall I love it and its a great start I look forward to seeing more....
My Adice really really don\'t worry about scores enjoy your painting ..

First piece of advice is beware of comments like these - we tend to pounce mercilessly on the slightest hint of innuendo, but as you\'re new, we\'ll let it pass this time :innocent:

Have to say that the karate dude looks great, fantastic work on the white (always difficult) and skin. I really like his face great expression. The base could do with some improvement though I do like the concept with the slate. The smaller rocks look wrong, kind of out of place and I think you could drybrush the slate a little lighter (though I do like the way it contrasts with the light colours on the figure).

Generally a very good start, looking forward to seeing more from you

ps I\'ve V&C\'d on the first one, like that too

@Highbulp Billy- regarding your comment on Hanako, and thankyou for it by the way, she is actually based, but the photos weren\'t great.. here she is based...

I\'ve found photographing minis to get them to look even remotely like they do in life incredibly difficult- think it\'s partly my camera, a mini-painting friend has commented that my camera is cruel on more than one occasion!

I\'ve seen the advice to thin paints in numerous places, and have started to do so- with water- should I be using some magic potion to thin with though?!

Currently working on Freebooter Bad Faerie.. a little ambitious I think, but I\'m having fun whilst waiting for my next batch of HF\'s to come through!:D

Photographing minis does seem to be much harder than painting them in the first place (and I find that difficult enough!) The important thing is to find an area with plenty of light (natural if possible) and take lots and lots of photos from different distances and angles etc so you will hopefully have plenty to pick from.

As for thinning paints - everyone has their preferred method. Generally speaking I think water is fine, you just need to experiment with different quantities to find what works best for you.

Keep up the good work :)
