Highlighting Camoflage

Hi All,

This is my current project, a Blackball games Rohling Soldat, in Pea Pattern Camo.

The question I have is what is the best way to highlight his camo? It's a relatively complex pattern and I can't see my usual techniques (poor as they are!) being of use as they are likely to destroy the pattern so far. Should I leave it and concentrate on everything else or have you any ideas?

Many thanks
David

You've bitten off a bit of work there.
My first thoughts are to use a zenthil (sp?) undercoat, then keep the paint thin so you get shading.
But I see you've already got paint on the mini.....

Highlights are going to be done with lighter shades of greens as you.
Shadows would be with darker shades of green.

Keep it thin on the existing, treat the green you've got like a base coat.
The black background under the green will stay black.

If it was me I would steer away from too many highlights on a cammo scheme as I find it quickly gets messy. I would rather give it a thin wash instead.

There are two main ways of highlighting camo - the paint-as-you-go approach where you meticulously highlight every colour as you work, and using a single highlight colour applied judiciously onto the flatly-painted camo.

At smaller scales the second is usually the one to go with, and combined with some form of preshading I think you'll get the best results you can with the minimum effort.

If you have an airbrush I'd do the preshading work and most or all of the post-camo highlighting by spraying (depending on the level you're going for), despite the tedium of masking and unmasking.
