Hi. I started painting an Ilyad mini and what happened ? With first layer of basecoat it was covered with many many small bits.. i dont know what is it. I\'ve had it once, and it diessapeard, but maybe someone know how to get rid of this ? I used new brush and old good ones.. the paints are also good.. i thought that it\'s dust on palette, but i washed it and that wasn\'t it.. i\'ll be grateful for help

if you spray varnished it, moister in the air or dust could have effected the finish.

i have had to restart a gd entry twice this week because of this.

Hi. i edited this topic, as i want to ask you another one question.. i face a problem with highlighting which i cannot find topic about.. here is a photo:

As you may see, the light line is in kinda weird place. And i didn\'t wanted it to be there.. when i highlight, i pull brush to the place wheich i want to be the lightest one, but the paint is on the place where i star pulling my paint. i dont have any problems with shading, but i can never get good results with highlights. i thin my paint with about 60-90% of water, dry my brush well, so it doesn\'t form drops.. what it can be ? :|

Did you say this is a resin mini? It could be mold release - a waxy substance that works like a resist to paint.

Resins got to be washed and primed well before starting.

No, it\'s not beacuse of resin- i have this problem on all kind of minis... btw, resin was washed very well

What brand of paints are you using?
What primer?
What do you thin your paints with?

I looks like an adhesion problem, not a coverage problem.

do you handle the minis? lay them in your hand while you are painting?

Also how many layers?? as you lay more layers on you can pull the layer underneath off.

also when spraying your undercoat if your too far away the paint can dry slightly before reaching the mini and give a grainy feeling with dusty pigment which might not be visible until paint added.

Primer is smooth, i\'m using Citadel paints, i put mini on a drill and never touch it, i dillute paints qith distilled water..

if you thin the paints too much they will have problems sticking.

what you will find is that you get lots of little dropplets forming.

put a little less water in the mix.
it\'s a bit of trial and error. vallejo and rackham paints will stand up to being watered down heavily more so than gw paints. (i\'m not saying gw paints are bad)

hope this helps.:)

I also thought about this, but every time i read about smooth transitions i hear about thinning paints with looots of water.. hmm i\'ll give it a try.. oh, i also try to do a lot of fast brush strokes, maybe i should try to put it on area and let dry ?

You should always try out what works best for you and not go blindly on what other people say! Try it, but if YOU don\'t like it try something else... There are many ways to paint a mini! :)

BTW, Ilyad\'s resin minis don\'t seem to need washing! I\'ve never seen or otherwise experienced any traces of release agent on them.

@Ritual, I have never painted their resin, that was a general statement for resin vs. lead/white metal minis. I\'m glad to learn that & I stand corrected.

If you are wet blending, then several layers while the paint is wet is normal. But for layering, you have to let each layer dry first. Latex based paints have a tender period where you actaully peel the lower layer(s) of paint off with the brush instead of applying a new layer. From what you are saying, this could well be the cause of your problem.

I cure this by having several minis on the table at once so that as one is drying, I am working on the next. Not real condusive to GD level painting, but great for tabletop squads.

I\'m not understanding this, Washed with Milliput as in the modelling compound?
Or is there another product with the same name?

Glad I wasn\'t the only one that wondered about this...thought I was being daft....

I assumed (you know what happens when you do that) that he used a thinned milliput like a wash to fill any pinholes....
But I could be wrong....
???
