Highlighting red painted minis (Blood Angels)

I´m not sure, how to highlight my blood angel space marines.
Shall I blackline them or should I paint the edges in a brighter color ( for example orange)
The codex says that they look best with the blacklining method, but thre is a new article on the GW Webside that preferes the other method.
So I want to hear some opinions from the pros like u, before I´m going to paint my new troops.
Some hints and tricks about painting red vehicles would be very helpfull

Thanks a lot

What do you think?

Here are links to some of the higher ranking Blood Angels on this site.

From what I can tell, they either use no black lining, or more frequently, a combo of black lining and highlighting the edges. So I will agree with Zenmaster. Go with both.

How\'s that for not giving an opinion.

I like the second link in that list. Make all of your men look like that.:D

Use the two

Some of the blood angels of the above links are painted by me and I use the two methods: blacklining with black and brown inks, and highlights with blazing orange-blood red mix, fiery orange and golden yelllow (thined red ink helps to soft extreme highlights).Good luck!

both?

blacklining is useful for defining...as minis are really small, blacklining helps to bring out the \"parts\"...as for highlighting and shading, it brings out the depth and lighting of the mini.

both methods are good and normally for me, its using both (that\'s if i am bothered - imagine painting 100 goblins and doing so for all of them...argh!!)

The nicest ones I\'ve looked at have edging done in a clean manner with fury orange with a blood red/orange base shaded with blood red and that other dark red (watchamucallit, you know the one) then blacklined with a mix of chesnut ink and black paint.

Blood Angels

I\'d probably go with both myself, but if you are just going to play with your minis why not try a basecoat of terracota (do GW still make this?) then blackline what you need to, before building up your layers of blood red and finishing with blood angel orange-blood red mix. Maybe some final highlights of pure blood angel orange.

Don\'t take this reply as gospel, as I\'ve only just figured this technique myself. (with a little help from Tammy Hayes / minigrrl)
