Highlighting Yellow/Painting over matte varnish/dullcote

I\'m highlighting an Imperial Fist Space Marine painted in golden yellow paint. What are some ways to highlight the figure without making him look neon yellow?

Also, can one paint over a figure that has been matt varnished or dullcoted?

Thanks!

If you dull the shadows it can help accentuate the highlights without touching them. And yes, you can paint over dullcoat.

Granddad!
you want to use an ochre color for the shading something like Snakebite leather, or add some to your yellow
maybe something like Sunburst for the highlights

Add small amounts of white. If the colour ends up looking too dull you can also add in some of a brighter yellow.

As already mentioned, paying attention to the shading can also help the yellow base work as the highlight colour, although personally I think you\'ll generally want to go a little lighter even if just in a few areas.

add purple for shading, use ivory for highlights.

you certainly can, in fact many techniques in military modelling actually require coats of varnish inbetween applications of paint/washes or decals
