So I have a few ideas for things to do for the charity that Brett put together over at WaMP (link's in my sig) and I'd like to - hopefully - do some WIPs so that they come out better than my usual fare. I'd also appreciate any feedback as I go along.

I'm planning on painting up Wyrd's Seamus, Madame Sybelle and the Rotten Belles. The idea is to have them on gaming bases set in diorama displays. I have the Ortegas (also from Wyrd) painted up, so I'll just need to put together the diorama.

I'm also planning on doing a 3' x 3' gaming board with a sewer setting. This is a general overview of the board:

The "islands" in the middle will be free standing, so they can be moved around, allowing more flexibility. This will also be divided into 4 18" x 18" sections; shipping a 3' x 3' board might be pretty difficult.

The walkways around the outer edge will have varying elevations. Here's a small sample:

If time and materials allow, I'll also be building a chessboard using Hirst Arts blocks. Nothing overly fancy, although I may add a few details here and there. The spaces on the side are for storing pieces. And no, I won't be providing minis as pieces as I simply don't have that kind of money.

Any thoughts or suggestions are most welcome.

I've never attempted anything on this scale before, so it will undoubtedly be a learning process - which is why I'm doing WIPs. Hopefully others will be able to help me as I go along.

i have to say that i am most excited by the sewer, love that sort of project. what are you planning to make it from? how tall will you make the walls? straight or curved? was worried at first about the inflexibility but making those islands movable will sort that out

The very bottom will be 1/4" MDF board. On top of that will be 1/2" polystyrene foam and that will be the base. The walkway around the edge will be varying thicknesses of polystyrene, with HA blocks on top. I'll try to put together a small sample of what I'm going for.

how tall will you make the walls? straight or curved?

That's something that I'm still thinking about. I don't want the walls to be too tall as that might become a hassle to work around while people are using it.

Hope so. There were also be different types of small bridges (wood, stone, steel) so it can be used for various genres and settings.

Here's a small sample of what I'll be going for with the Sewer board. It's not pretty, but it's something I threw together quickly:

My daughter was sick today and needed me to stay home with her, so when I had some free time I did some work on Ashley Campbell - the white queen for the chess set.

Still plenty far to go. Just wanted to get some colors on her and see how it looked. Feedback is always appreciated.

Man, you got a lot going on your desktop, congrats for putting all that together for the good cause. So you plan on painting 32 minis for that chess set? That's a pretty bold project.
I'll be sure to keep an eye on this one.

No, not painting all 32 pieces. I don't have the minis or money to get them. I do have some from the list and I'll be working on those, but I've put out a request for others to help out by donating minis they have, either painted or unpainted. A few people have graciously offered some pieces, so we're well under way.

I see, I have a bunch of minis I won't be able to paint anytime soon... I'm way to slow and lazy to actually paint something for the cause, but I could send you one or two. PM and we can fix something, if you want.

Just a quick update on the board. I have all the board pieces cast and painted (although nothing is set in place yet). Ran out of blocks for the wall, so I'll finish that over the next few days.

The sewer looks a bit like the stuff in the game "Oblivion" could be worth a look at that for further inspiration

Pretty close to being done with this; still a few places that need to be touched up. Got the pieces from my old chess set and set them up (missing one pawn, though).

First time I've tried making a chess board and it was definitely a learning experience.

Now I just need all the pieces to go with it.

I saw a chessboard on another forum where the squares of the playing area were slightly raised in seemingly random order. Taking inspiration from that, I had an idea for a board where the "royal" row is raised well above the rest of the board, the pawns slightly raised and the middle four rows flat as usual.
