Hey guys and gals :)

first post here and its an important one.
i am currently working alongside a small multi-media company on what could turn out to be a very promising project. Our aim is to make tabletop war gaming as a hobby in it\'s whole, more accessible to people who have little or no experience in the hobby, Or more often see some of your fine work and get scared or put off. We have a lot of ideas down. But our main way of getting info is from you! So if there is something you would liek to see on a website that supplies and advises it\'s customers, what would it be? what did you liek when you started the hobby, and what put you off or dissapointed you about the service you got? Anything at all along those line :) Many thanks.

Why not talk to GW, i\'m sure they would be only to happy to help and with years of experience of making tabletop wargaming a hobby i\'m sure it would help.

Bah, who an I kidding?

The reasons why we got into this hobby in the first place are going to vary between gamers and painters. The community aspects are of course important but more so for gamers I think then painters. Or rather most of got into this because of friends but continued when they stopped because you can paint alone but you need friends to game.

On the negative side some might have been put off becasue it\'s \"nerdy\" others because it costs a lot of money. Or just real life, studies coming in between. Many do come back though from time to time though... that\'s encouraging.

It\'s such a huge topic this one. You\'d be better off making some kind of survey with directed questions.

when i was 12 i stumbled across a GW store and went in to have a nosey, they were having a scenery making day, so i sat down and made scenery. That same day i bought a golden demon booklet, and i was inspired by all the wonderful miniatures, so i started painting miniature after miniature, and try and get as good as the masters.

thats how i got into the hobby

i mainly like the painting half of the hobby,
and for your site i\'m not sure.the best site for this hobby, in my opinion is Cmon
:D

How\'s about a \'Starters guide for game X\'? Start with the basic rules, some of the fluff (what you can get without stepping on copyright issues), links to that company\'s website. Maybe a quick painting guide and links to painting sites. A guide for parents, I see this being a big plus, so they can judge which game is right for little Jonnie/Sally. Maybe a rating system from persons of different ages? Some sort of visual mini ID system so the grand/parents can find the right mini/parts for the game system that Jonnie/Sally is involved in.
I guess that I see something geared to parents so they can judge what may work best.

don\'t be afraid to paint something.
just because you don\'t get it perfect the first time doesn\'t mean you didn\'t do something right and gain from painting.

don\'t be afraid to test something out before painting a mini. paint something else like a popsycle stick to test your color if you mix them.

use the proper tools. don\'t get hurt by using a knife or other tool that is dull and could slip rather than cut and hurt yourself with.

take care of your tools. brushes, knives, everything last longer when taken care of properly. some of the more expensive tools are not fun to replace because you forgot to wash your $15 brush. a minute or two cleaning saves a lot of money.

enjoy doing it. if you feel frustrated when painting or modelling a mini then put it down. pick up your tools and clean up your workspace. come back when you are a bit more relaxed. some details of minis can be frustrating. there is no time limit on your hobby. no matter what an non fully painted mini can still be played with in a mini wargame.

consider everything a work in progress. odds are even once you have finished something when starting out you may want to change it later. go ahead and change it if you want. its your mini and your hobby. make it what you want and change as you see fit.

don\'t be afraid to do something different. some minis may have a default paint scheme, but there is not going to be someone busting down your door and pointing a gun to your head forcing you to paint a mini that way. its your mini, paint it how you want. not every mini has to look the same even. if you prefer individual minis in a unit to look different instead of uniform then go for it. the more differences the more easily to tell the minis apart when gaming.

example: 5 guys all have the same weapons/options and are game mechanically the same. they can look different without taking away form their game stats.

example 2: 5 guys all have different weapons/options. now with 5 individual looking minis it is easy to distinguish them apart.

in both cases the same 5 minis could be used. this saves money as well since you don\'t need to buy the second set of 5.

don\'t buy into the hype. as above buying more than you really need is not only a money drain, but a resource drain as well. time painting the minis to game with means it takes longer to actually play unless you do the above and are willing to play with non fully painted minis.

don\'t think you have to enjoy painting to play a tabletop miniature wargame. many games are prepainted and fully assembled today. for those that are not you can get by with simple painting rather than trying to go to extremes with painting. again make it what you want. if you want as few colors and little painting as possible just to play a game with your minis with then do that.

don\'t subscribe to money grab gaming schemes. while GW games are fun some of their tournament rules are a bit abusive when combining all the hobbies together.
there are several tournament rules for GW tournaments.
3 colors minimum. this is a good one so you don\'t have to play with unpainted or just primered/basecoated minis.
WYSIWYG. ignore this. if you don\'t want to buy parts to make specific minis and use minis for multiple option designs then do as above and make them how you want with some way to identify the ones that need to be different because of special options.
this goes for other tournaments as well. if you don\'t like the tournament rules, then don\'t feel like you have to play in tournaments. there are more places to play than a local gaming store. if they want to be competitive with super restrictive or crazy rules, then find somewhere else. you should play a tabletop wargame to have fun. be it competetive, or jsut for the sake of playing the game.

GW tournaments also have 3 prizes.
Sportsmanship. tournament or not you should be a good sport when playing.
Tournament winner. this is the person that wins the games in the tournament.
Painting. this persons \"army\" was voted the best painted by the judges.

as there are 3 prizes then you have a choice for your goals. you don\'t have to try to win them all. to my knowledge they winner in each prize category gets the same prize, but a different certificate to specifiy which category (s)he won in.

again with any tournament figure out which prize if any you want to go for if more than one is offered. you don\'t have to go for all of them.

and lastly (for this post), have fun. again its your hobby, your time, your money, make what you want of it. if you like painting more than playing don\'t feel you have to play the game. if you like playing more than painting then just paint it up to look decent for you. don\'t worry about painting every eyeball or cuticle. if you like both then do both so long as you are having fun with your hobby. it is a hobby after all and not a job. so its something you should be doing to have fun away from the work you already have to do on a daily basis.

Shadzar Have you read the first post?
Because by that post of yours it\'s blatently obvious that you haven\'t.

The guys asking for help in trying to get a website aimed at expanding knowledge of the hobby, not starting out in it himself.

yes i did, did you? i responded especially to this part. for a website/online store that caters to its customers i would suggest the things i posted. if you have people looking at the hobby with fear to begin with then they can be turned off form it thinking that paintign minis must be done a specific way. such as the GW standards. the problem with that is as i stated above. the hobby is multi-part. the best thing a website or any store providing services for its customers is to help remove the fears of the different aspects of the hobby.

you don\'t have to be the best painter to enjoy painting minis for/from tabletop wargames.

to make all aspects of the hobby more accessbile to all people you have to curb the elistism and make sure the hobbyists are having fun. that is what a hobby is, fun.

so i adressed concerns i have seen in hobby stores that try to force certain things on people and in turn drive them away form the hobby. those things seem to make the hobby LESS accessible to people since it tries to add stipuplations on it that are unneeded.

without knowing more about the specific project then i can\'t really offer other advice than to remove those fears and concepts that many tabletop wargamers try to force on beginners.

its a hobby. something for fun. not all peoples fun is equal or comes in the same form. so a hobbyist shouldn\'t feel like (s)he has to conform to someone else\'s idea of fun.

Shadzar Yes I did which is why I asked.
Because your post is completly aimed at a hobbyist and not someone starting a business or service.

again the post is asking for ideas from hobbyists. did you read it as asking for how to start a busniess or a website? (i don\'t think CMoN the best place to get that advice from.) because i read it as how to make tabletop wargming more popular/accessible to even those who are not inclined to jump into it head first, and thus get more people into the hobby.

I refer you to the portion above of the original post which was his primary question.

oddly that is what my initial response was too.

what did you liek when you started the hobby, and what put you off or dissapointed you about the service you got?

what put me off. the elistist attitude many people had about something having to be done a specific way.

my personal tangile property, my decision what to do with it. build, mod, paint, etc.

you want to pay for the product/materials and pay me to paint it, then i will paint it how you want within my abilities. otherwise don\'t try to dictate to people how they have to paint something.

and painting/modding minis is what CMoN is about.

that elistist BS is what turns many people away from tabletop gaming, be it minis games or other.

don\'t get me wrong, i am an elitist when it comes to MY AD&D. but it isn\'t a game that everyone enjoys the same way, the same as mini gaming and its many aspects of the hobby. i don\'t force people to not play anythiing other than AD&D 2nd Edition, nor do i force them to play it. likewise they shouldn\'t try to force me to play something else. the same goes for minis games.

break the elistist BS and the hobby becomes more accessible to all.

Its great to see the comments coming in! Were trying not to just reach people who have just started but the core too! The point to our site will be to make it possible for people interested that are a little daunted by the models that inspire us to make better of our own talents and abilities. We won\'t forget the fact that under every good peice of artwork theres a passion and a desire to do the best. What we want is for people to see that it\'s not that daunting to start off on the path some of us may have found more difficult :) I guess if you want a straight forward question it\'s simply \"What do you love about the hobby as a whole?\"

the freedom to create something with the materials that you couldn\'t create without miniatures.

building a miniature house, tank, soldier, etc are things anyone can do. where buildign the real thing would not be so easily done by everyone for lack of funds, ability, etc.

anyone can paint and play minis games.

painting is something you can do by yourself to relax, or something you can do with friends. and at the end you have something to show for your effort. unlike some other \"hobbies\" that are not as productive.

you can reach into your furthest imagination and pull things from a mini that didn\'t exist or simply change it to colors you prefer if it was already painted once.

likewise with painting you can always redo it. strip the paint and start over if you dont like it. a little bit of time and paint is lost, but nothing like a major purchase is required to continue painting.

while some people may be able to draw/freehand in painting other of us who can\'t can still paint and create something form our minds to actually show to other people where a simple explanation wont do it justice.

its art and expression, but mostly its fun.

edit: i found a mail/message in my u2u thing however due to site difficulties i cannot read the message but only see who it is from. just wanted to let know so someone doesn\'t think they are being ignored sicne i am unable to read/reply to messages via the built in functions, as i only can access the forums, and articles.
