Holding your mini while painting... the poll!

I already posted in the other thread so I won\'t wright the whole thing other again. I choosed Number 4!!! (Yes I\'m sure I want number 4.......yeah! I win the grand prize) :D

Well, it implies consistency. At times I\'ve done any of those but 1. I guess I most often do the glove thing though.

Not bad Garshnak, I can draw, but not as well as the Rackham design team. Besides, this guy, whoever he\'s supposeed to be just sorta \"felt right\" whatever that means.:rolleyes::D

Oops...

Poll too fast...I thought the first choice was the DIY stand.

Actually what I use is my own stand. Depending on the mini, I use either

(1) A small bottle cap with the mini tacked to it (using blue tack)

(2) Ice-cream stick on a foam base

(3) My recycling base from GW. It\'s been inverted over to hold the mini. Of course tacked with blue tack again.

Added: Sometimes I just hold it with my bare hands. That\'s when I paint army stuff. You do one colour for 5 or more and that gives it a chance to dry with leaving fingerprints on it.

Spice bottles

Spice bottles are awesome to mount a figure to. I use the entire bottle not just the cap, I put some poster tac (blue tac, white tac are the same) and use either a cork or a scrap base that I pin the mini to, then I cover the base in the poster tac. I now have a large handle to hold my mini while painting, thus rarely do I touch it.

And my answer is 2...
But I don\'t use cork nor a bootle cap but a shell casing... That\'s a strange idea, but 20mm shell have a casing which fit the size of the hand.
I found mine on the ground years ago (that\'s living near WW battlesites) and kept it storing pencils in it.... Then one day, Eureka! I put blue tac on the bottom, and voilà!

The wife isn\'t too keen on getting modelling paint on her finger nails so I use Tamiya paint pots with blue tac to hold the mini either by its base stuck to the blue tac or if they are smaller such as the warmaster figures or 15mm stuff which come on their own cast base then I stick them straight into the blue tac.

If I\'m doing the old plastic epic stuff then I will stick them to a section of sprue and I find this method very useful.

For the larger and heavier stuff I tend to use magnetic strip tape and a magnet on the end of a wooden dolly (read into that what you may as I know you will but its nothing I can be locked up for yet!!).:cool:

I use a little hand vice for holding minis with a GW-esq tab on the bottom, or for most things, including some tabbed minis, I use an old X-Acto handle with a screw in that the end has been cut off (the bit you put the screwdriver in) and then use crocodile clips to keep the minis firm whilst I paint. This also has the added attraction that I can merely detach the croc clip, pop it into my drying stand and use another clip to hold another mini (my small one is pictured below, I\'ve got a massively large one that goes half way up a wall too, the small one is just for \'current work\').

Here\'s the other little mini hand vice that I use for \'tabbed\' minis. Of course, I can\'t detach the mini from this handle, so I use this one for any mini that has a tab that I\'m currently painting.

I apologise in advance for the loading time of this reply, but most of the pics are small. If anyone wants to get one of the little vice handles I have a contact that you can buy them from, as well as cheap X-Acto handles (its a UK company).
