Hollywood needs a kick in the pants - remakes

Heard last night that there are reputed to be 40-50 projects in the works that are remakes

This includes, wait for it:
Robocop
Conan The Barbarian
They Live
(!)
The Thing
The Last Starfighter
The Taking Of Pelham 123
Hellraiser
Friday The 13th
Death Wish
Tron
Akira
A Nightmare On Elm Street
The Birds
Escape From New York
Short Circuit
Near Dark
Logan\'s Run
Straw Dogs
Red Sonja
(!)
Dirty Dozen
Dune
Westworld
Clash Of The Titans
(!)

Now some of those I\'m for as it\'s been long enough and I\'d like to see what they can do today. But I think many people would agree that not a few are like, why, as in not needed (Tron, The Thing)! And a few are why, as in what\'s the point since the idea wasn\'t great shakes the first time round?!

In case you didn\'t spot it, there are three John Carpenter flicks in there.

Hate to point this out, but John Carpenter\'s The Thing was a remake - and even used footage from the original 1950\'s version.

Films aren\'t the \'event\' they used to be, that is for sure.

I believe FRIDAY the 13th is not only reputed, but actually showing.

I can see who some on the list would really benefit from a modern (read cgi graphic) update.

Yes I know that but the original was from 30 years previously, was B&W and features a giant carrot lol The remake brought slightly more to the table (and still holds up today, which is the important thing IMB).

Where? Seen on a TV screen?

Oh yeah, sorry, I forgot about that one. I meant to say some of these are actually currently being made, like The Taking Of Pelham 123.

Agree. Sometimes a remake is \'interesting\'. Sometimes it can be an improvement once you factor in technological advances etc, but a lot of the time you just end up asking \"Why?\"

*cough* The Wicker Man, The Ladykillers *cough*

Somehow it seems to tarnish the original rather than enhance it.

John Carpenter did exactly TWO good movies: The Thing and Big Trouble in Little China. The rest of his stuff is forgetable and shouldn\'t be watched, much less remade.

EASY TIGER! I hope you allow for They Live! As well. Rowdy Roddy Piper vs. Keith David? \"I have come here to kick ass and chew bubblegum, and I\'m fresh outta bubblegum.\"!

Surely that was an oversight on your part..... Only because I can\'t imagine how a fan of Big Trouble couldn\'t appreciate They Live as well.

Totally agree..They Live is a classic!

But he totally ruined Vampire..now theres a book that could deal with a proper movie done of it.

Yeah, pretty much agree with those assesments. A tiny fraction of the films listed could do with the makeover, but as for the rest? :possessed::|~:possessed:

Actually I think the Anti-Corporation theme might ring especially clear in todays market. But why re-make RoboCop? I just don\'t get it. Half of those, I just have to ask \"why?\". The most puzzling.... Short Circuit. Maybe the Guttenberg is going to direct this future Oscar nominated film himself?

Short Circuit 3: Skynet

Johnny 5 realizes that humanity is full of jerks and decides to take over the world. He uploads himself into a military computer (\"What? Nobody changed those codes?\") and sets the Terminator series in motion.

Conan The Barbarian... No. Don\'t remake it.

Clash of the Titans: This one, I wouldn\'t object to seeing an update, like they did with Star Wars, but remaking it isn\'t really needed.

Tron: Not needed. Those cheesy old graphics rocked.

They Live!: I\'d rather see Roddy do a sequel than anybody do a remake.

Logan\'s Run: If they get it right, this time, I\'m all for it.

Escape from New York: Don\'t touch it.

Red Sonja: Remaking is pointless. Most people try to pretend the original never existed, anyway.

The Thing: They\'ll ruin it.

For the rest, well, I just picked the ones I have the most thoughts on. The others, I just don\'t feel like typing about.

Hardcore Conan fans will tell you that Ah-nolds version has little, if anything to do with the Conan character.

I still loved it, however, they did a good job not to fall into the \'cheesiness\' of most \'sword and sorcery\' movies. At least until the sequel anyhow.

The Curious Case of Forrest Gump

That is hilarious!

great quote

i am all for some remakes tbh. there are a few films that would benefit from current technology and thinking to make the film better. for example, as much as i love alien(s), i can\'t help but be disappointed when you actually see them. the little one looks like a sock puppet ffs! don\'t get me wrong, the suspense is awesome it just doesn\'t deliver enough for me any more

now hold on one damn minute..... benjamin button is based on a story by F. SCOTT FITZGERALD...... who lived a long damn time before gump even came out.... the author of forrest gump has even said he relied on many of fitzgeralds themes in his story.... which by the way is totally different than the movie. sorry but fitz is one of my favorite writers and equating him to the writer of forrest gump is like comparing episode 1 to empire....

on to tron: this is not a remake but a sequel.... my friend chris is attached to making some of the special effects for this movie and has boxleitner in the movie as well as some other originals....

the rest i give a meh to....

sorry bout that rant on button but i likes fitzgerald. soap box has been taken away ...

:)
