Home on leave and found a dremel in my hand

Well, I\'ve knocked out a lot of a little diarama in past 3 days and finally had to stop to let some glue dry, so I snapped pics. Very rough WIP, but what do you guys think?

The scene is an apothecary came across a fallen marine, took off his helmet, and lit a candel for his fallen comrade. There will be one of those placard thingies on the base (as soon as I figure out how to make one ;)) that reads, \"The soul of a warrior is the shield of humanity.\"

Comments, concerns and help apreciated.

Thank you in advance,
Nick-

depends how much texture I want and what effect..
For industrial effect plasticard with strips full of rivets acting as joining pieces and themarine tank interior consoes look sweet.
For grainy gravelly type affairs a mix of Fine Bird sand and pva coloured to whatever effect with paint..The thickness and texture of this can be altered..
Valejo do a coupe of textured Pastes in tubs that I am finding more and more useful..
Rocky effects are done with polystyrenes..

so yeah pretty much anything that comes to hand depending on the effect I want.

I certainlly like the direction your heading in.

It\'s a bit hard to comment as it is in fairly early stages but I would be a touch worried that the cardboard might warp, buckle, or bleed through whatever you intend to cover it with. Foam core might have been a better choice?

The apothecarys thighs look a little slim lol

This is looking great so far, a very cool narrative too.

Agree about hte cardboard base though, would a block of wood be morE durable?

Just wait \'till he gets buff. He\'ll be all like; \"Yeahup, I been workin\' out\". Then all the SoB\'s \'ll be like \"WOW! Check his s*it out!\"
Then he\'s like, \"Did someone call for a doctor???\"

Then the music starts...

Looking good ;)

@TBS You\'ve been watching way too many films that you\'re not old enough for lol

Nice scene though Itchy, look forward to seeing it flesh out.

I use water based spackle - thinned to where it is brushable, and then brush it on - for a thicker look more layers.

By the way, hows training going?

I love the story that the diorama is telling. Are you going to make the area dark and do light sourcing?

Have you also thought about what chapter you\'re going to do?

We need more pics.....:)

I am going to use Durhams Rock Hard Water Putty over the cardboard. I\'ve used it in the past over cardboard without any troubles, but I\'m starting to think I\'m the only one who still uses the stuff. As for painting, I was thinking about painting it black and white. I\'ve only got till friday to work on it before I have to report, so I probably wont get it painted. But I\'m hoping to finish building it before I go. Thanks for the help and side story;)

Oh hey, what do you guys use to texture flat surfaces? And does anybody know an easy way to make a placard for the base?

steelcult - School\'s almost over... made it through boot (had a blast) and got through A School and C School, now I\'ve got 7 weeks of F School in San Diego and I\'m already attached to my ship, the LHA-5 Peleliu. So all the easy stuff\'s over, now I\'ve just got to save the world;)

The texture I plan on using for this is brushed concrete like what you\'d find in a war torn city fight where the only place you can reflect over a fallen comrade would be with your back to the wall/in the corner. But I find myself using any and all types of texture that can be dreamed up. For the placard I was thinking something like this;
IMG_2042.jpg

The bit that says SQUAT (looks a bit huge for a Squat don\'t it? Plus I don\'t remember the Squats ever falling prey to Chaos) only I want mine a little more flashier. Not just a slab of plasticard with GS rivets in the corners. Sounds like I might need to take another look through my bits box, eh?

Just a thought for the Placard, but forgeworld do large brass etched imperial eagle sheets- the eagle symbol will be flashy and tie in with the marines and there may be enough space to write your slogan on too. Just an idea.

@TBS Ghosties are better than ghoulies......;)

One thing on using pasticard for the placard..
The example you shaow is simple. You can alter this by using thicker card and cutting it at the edges to look a bit more relief...

cool idea with the eagles from Fworld..Like that one.

Also chek out a local engravers they may be able to make one for ya>....

Those are good ideas, but unfortunately I don\'t have time for them (leave ends saturday) so I just used a piece of mattboard. But the forgeworld ones sound very cool and will soon be on my Christmas wish list. OK, I know this is hurried, but this is what I got. I like the idea I had in my head more than what I\'ve created, but that\'s what you get when you don\'t take your time. Hope this inspires somebody out there:)
