Honestly, how do you vote?

I started to notice myself voting like this:

\"Okay, I really like that piece. They\'ve had 23 votes and they have a nice average of 7.8. The only problem is, they deserve a little more than that IMHO! I\'ll give them 10 because there have been so many votes that my 10 won\'t make it look lop-sided...It may only increase it by 0.1 or 0.2, but this is my gift to this great paint job!\"

Does anyone recognise that thought process? lol

Another is the old \"Well, I\'d like to give 7.5, so I\'ll vote once at 8 and another at 7, giving 7.5!!!\"

Am I doing wrong, do you think, or is this normal? Over to Jerry Springer...

well once in a while id score higher marks if i personally just like the mini above the paint job. either the way they composed it etc. now i try and be a little nicer and usually now vote one full point above what i used to. a lot less people vote nowdays so im glad that my vote actually counts for something and isnt just a point of a point of a point. when you look at page views vs votes it seems alot of people use the browse images section and if they dont like the mini they just close the page or something? on the flip side it seems if a mini is popular then its page views vs votes is higher meaning if you browse to it you have decided its worth voting on? no clue/

I try not to look at the vote mark until after I have decided what it should be. I then look at the comments, if any. If the mini is ranked right around what I think it should be, I will vote my true feeling.

If the mini is voted lower than what I think it should be, I take another closer look to find out if I missed something I shouldnt have. If I dont see it I will give it a 10 to help raise the score on it.

If the mini is rated higher than what I thnk it should be I again take another look to see what other people are seeing that I dont see. If I blew my first impression, I stay with the majority. If I feel it is overrated, I will rate what I think it should be.

I DO NOT, however, rate a mini a 1 because I feel it should be ranked lower!
In fact I can think of only a few instances I have ever rated less than a 3.

Ah, the flipside! I\'m the same, I won\'t do that old 1 point lark :innocent:

However, I will go a little lower in much the same way as I\'ll go a little higher.

It brings us right into the middle of the old problem of some people rating the miniature rather than the painting. I hate seeing a high mark on an averagely painted piece for no other reason than it being a new release or whatever.

Or even an unpainted figure!

You\'re right Lurch! Something\'s in the air!

I see your point entirely. You learn, tinker, experiment and all that, and some conversion (unexplained conversion as well) takes the plaudits! Your work is clean and imaginative, so keep on keeping on, as they say. Don\'t let that rating issue get you down. I had the same thing with some of my work, but I stopped getting down about it and tried to come back with something better. Myu next target is an 8 after 20-30 votes. When I do that, I\'ll be happy for a while. Next step, one year later, a 9 rating...let\'s pull each other through. :bouncy:

Votes

Well, I don\'t tinker much with the votes. I normally vote what I feel is the right score for a given mini. The only instances I stop and check if my impression is wrong, is when my subjective vote strays too far (1 or 2 pts, up or down) from the average. In those cases, I spend a little more time on a second analysis of the mini.

i vote as i want to:if a mini scored 7.1 but for me is a 6 (in one case was a 5) i give that vote

I give the mini what I think should be it\'s due. I do look at current rating too. Sometimes a mini won\'t be striking at first look so I may be incing toward a 6, but after noticing it has a 7.8 average I may take a closer look. Sometimes I catch the subtleties I missed at first look, and change my mind, but more often I go with my first instinct.

if the mini is a 5.1, and I think it deserves better, I do not give it a 10. I think this is unfair. I will give it what it\'s worth, and make a comment explaining my judgement. Such comments sometimes help raise the score of a mini since people start noticing things they didn\'t notice at first.

Also when you\'re giving a 10 or a 1 for a 5 or 6 mini, keep in mind there is a good chance your vote will be discarded as a mis-vote after 50 votes.

Hide Scores

I feel hiding the scores is the way to go. I do tend to find myself saying \"What???\" a few times when I see the average after I vote, but that is the way it is.

I do a little of all of the above . . . I sometimes go extra high on a figure that I think deserves more credit than just the base paint job. Like Victoria\'s English Colonial Bear firing a Pistol. The paint job is great but I also gave a point because it\'s an English Colonial Bear firing a Pistol . . .
Know what I mean?

I also try to avoid 10\'s unless it is really something terrific and unique. But that means I have to stylistically prefer every aspect of it - painting has to be flawless, colors have to be basically what I would have picked, and it usually helps if I feel I could never in a million years recreate it.

And I don\'t think I\'ve ever given anything less than a 4? (I dont remember if I did but if so, I assure you, it was a very poorly done figure indeed).

My point about ten

I don\'t vote ten on any miniature, only if it\'s an 8.? that I felt should have an extra point on the decimal. Know what I mean? I don\'t go around stupidly marking up and I definitely don\'t go out and make stupid lowerings of ratings. It\'s all about in the smae area, only slightly higher/lower.

Some people I\'ve seen are, simply, undermarked! It makes me laugh as there are favourites, so these people/miniatures get that little more. On the other hand, this is only now and again. It is something I noticed recently, that\'s all!

90% accurate I\'d say, but then at least 75% of people can quote statistics for no real reaon other than to sound knowledgeable :p

my scale

Flashman, you can see your lowest votes easily. Just \"browse images\" and sort by \"my votes\"

Voting on the figure not the paintjob.
Actually, I\'m pretty sure people consider both. You are worried about people who paint poorly getting pushed up for having a new release figure. The reverse is true too. I\'ve had plenty people tell me my painting is good, but I\'m doing it on 1970s minis so my ranking is poor. Sculpt and painting are both factors in a \"cool mini\"

As to how I vote:
I look at the picture, and apply the scale I set up when I started (it\'s in my profile).
I hold in my mind what I think it should be, then I read the comments (not scores connected to them) and sometimes something is pointed out that raises or lowers my vote. Then I vote. Then I see what the average score is.

I\'ve been tempted to just look at the average score and round up to the nearest whole number and vote that because that\'s how 90% of my votes fall, but I don\'t because of the other 10%

Ermm...

Rev, I think you\'re giving this too much thought. Not that I don\'t carefully consider the votes I give, but I\'m really not too worried about how my vote stacks up against the hordes of howling voters worldwide. Just give it your best <integer> guess, namsayin?

Actually

I vote quite honestly the way I see the mini. Unfortunately a bad picture get lower scores from me. And I leave comments ofr anyone that makes me stop and look twice (whether its bad or good). I rarely give a 10 or 1 but judge the mini as fairly as I can.

My husband (who is a terrible painter) is strictly a 1 or 10 kinda guy. I can\'t be in the same room with him when he\'s logged on, because I just get enraged with his voting!

I am of the hope that most voters will lean towards an \"honest\" vote. I would guess after about 50 votes the tally is about 90% accurate.

Peace

Thri-keen, you\'re absolutely right! I am thinking a a little too much aren\'t I ???

I misrepresented meslf a little, but normally I do vote by what I see, even to the point of making multiple votes to give an average with decimal points (like 7.5 or 8.3333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333) so I know I am expressing my true thought on that mini. However, I\'m sure that we all rate the odd one a little higher if we think it has been misrepresented? That little 10% we mentioned, the rogue vote...

I try not to look at the average vote until after I voted. I think it\'s too easy to \"go with the flow\" :) But any method of voting, this is still a great forum to have your minis viewed and see lots of other great minis.

Voting

I must admit, I\'ve been bad at times... Its like an extreme, vengeful form of what \"rev\" said he does.

On occasion everyone comes across one of those models that just looks decent and the painter is just starting out so you want to give them credit for hard work.. but then there\'s always that lone moron who decides to give them a 1 and leaves a nasty post that\'s hypercitical and picks out things like \"the colors are awful, you don\'t have five layers of shading, etc\". that usually irritates me enough to where i\'ll go look at the commentor\'s minis and give them low marks just because he was such a jerk to the poor newb.

:( I know its wrong.. I\'ll just go and sit in the corner as punishment. To be honest its only happened once or twice but I wonder if anyone else has done this?

*shifts uncomfortably in his seat*

I feel guilty saying this, but I have done exactly the same! :innocent:

Ah well, it was only once, and I\'ll never do it again if you don\'t!

I\'ll have to go sit in the corner as well lol

How you vote, honestly........

i usually try to be fair. use the criteria i\'ve been taught for GW competions ( as that\'s all i compete in ) is it converted, does it have a standard or banner, is the painting original, multi colr base and textures.
the must admit part, i tend to be \"harsh\" in response to others when they are uneccessarily rude/harsh to people.
said simply, spam somebody, expect polite spam back :(
the point, be adult/ploite in your assessment. don\'t insult, degrade. use the Golden Rule, due unto others.............
off the soap box...
peace
