Honestly, how do you vote?

average votes and feedback

at least i know i\'m not alone!

just to be clear, i do not advocate doing what i did. i only did it a couple times and since then i\'ve taken the more civil approach of simply posting praise for the mini in question to counteract the overly harsh criticism it may have received.

you know i think there is a whole lot of unfair voting going on here but ironically, i\'d say it comes out pretty accurate, just for the fact plenty of people try to counter act the hypercriticism. you\'ll always have that super nice guy who gives nothing but 10\'s and that sore-critic who likes to fling 1\'s.. but in the end if the model was a realistic 5, don\'t we get the same score anyway? when you first post a mini, this seriously comes into play.. i\'ve seen tabletop quality mini\'s i\'ve done drop to 4\'s and then rocket way up to 8\'s and 9\'s, only to drop down to a more appropriate 6 or 7 once 30 votes or so have come in. its only after you get a considerable number of votes down that you get a more accurate score.

feedback irks me a bit too.. it seems that only the top and bottom of the minis get serious feedback. i love it when i get some constructive criticism from someone better than me.. it really helps me improve and maybe consider things the next time around. those people who paint routinely for golden daemons and such really don\'t need 20 comments all saying \"WOW.. SO GREAT.. I WISH I COULD PAINT LIKE THAT\". just as the bottom doesn\'t need \"GEEZ THAT\'S JUST AWFUL.. GO HIDE YOUR HEAD IN SHAME\". its the average folks in the 5 to 8 range who need some friendly advice. as for the 1\'s to 3\'s, let\'s face it most of those are intentionally awful, they really don\'t need encouragment.

just my opinion.

Personally, I tend to react to the comments offered just as much as I do the work itsself. After all, this is like an online critique, and what an artist says about their work is as important during the process as what the work \"says.\"

I also tend to vote on the progress of a painter. If someone posts their first mini, and I rate it initially a 6, then I\'ll look to future postings for progress, which will generally increase if progress has been made. Otherwise, my vote will remain the same. Usually I try to offer comments on any miniatures I view larger than thumbnails, not just \"Wow, that\'s good\", but constructive criticism.

After all, even the best painters can get stuck in ruts using the same colors and the same type of miniatures. It\'s nice to see some variety in color choice and presentation, as well as subject matter. Without experimentation and exploration, there can be no growth.

guilty of lazyness i supose

i have to admit that i dont realy vote all that much unless the average is way off what i think it should be also i tend to judge purly on painting and where i feel aplicable ie no one else has said it, i try to add some constructive critisism. the reason i do all this is that i am first and foremost a painter and the only sculpting i have learnt is what is needed to get a miniature that is ridled with holes or otherwise just a bad cast to a place where i can paint it to some degree that i am happy with. as for recieving votes. Well i am far more interested in critisism of my own work than i am in how it rates against others because the reason that i registerd and started posting pictures is so that i can improve as a painter and i dont see how a possibly skewed opinoin of where my work fits into the grand scheme of things can help other than to enlarge or deflate someones ego. cant remember who sugested it but the idea of keeping votes hidden sounds a good way of keeping the votes honest. mabey with the caveat (sp?) that you can only vote once per mini and that the votes become viewable after you have voted

it has to be gut feeling

i won\'t look at the score until i\'ve made up my own mind what to score the mini

i guess it comes down to hoping that others would do the same for my stuff (i.e. vote honestly rather than be swayed by good or bad marks fom others)

the only time i feel tempted to \"fudge\" stuff is if it\'s a newly posted mini and it\'s ok but not that good and the poster\'s own vote is a ten (it\'s easy to spot as it will have 1 vote of, you guessed it, 10 )

that gets right up my nose as it\'s obvious that the poster is not being honest with either the community or with themselves

but still, it will always be marked, by me, on merit and merit alone

This is how I vote, Honestly

Well, what I do is wait for the picture to load. Then I look at it. Then I click one of the numbers between 1-10. Then the next picture loads and I do it again.

Honestly, This is how I do it....:):D

Is that what we are talking about here????

I haven\'t been on very long but here is what I do.
I usually hide the average (so that I won\'t be influenced) and then take a good look at the fig. Then I decide on a vote based on a 5 (basic tabletop figure) and go from there. I\'ve never given anyone anything less than a 3 and even then that\'s rare. Plus, I use the old standby \"if you can\'t say something nice, don\'t say anything at all.\" If it\'s really bad, I don\'t vote at all but click the handy red arrow button and move on.
