Hordes Legion of Everblight Typhon WIP

Hey everyone,

A very nice couple at my LGS asked me to paint a few of their Hordes Warbeasts for them. This is my very first commissions, so I'm extremely nervous. This Typhon still has a lot of work to do (I haven't painted the mouth area on any of the heads), but I was hoping for some guidance from the good people at CMON. How can I fix him up? Are his colors working? Is there any sloppy blending or brushwork I should focus on? How can I make sure he really "pops" off the table?

The commission was for $18 -- so that's going to average out to around $2.50 or $3/hour. Good thing I have a day job!

Thanks, guys!

This looks really good dude. What quality did you promise them for $18? This looks better than just gaming quality. There are a lot of people out there who would throw down more than $18 for this. You have to up the price or lessen the quality.

I think he already pops off the table for sure. Great job.

Thanks, man. I didn't make any promises as far as quality goes. I just really enjoy the painting aspect of this hobby, so I always do my very best on any project (whether it's for me, a free paintjob for a friend, or a paying commission). If I keep getting interest for future commissions, I might have to raise the rates just a tad! I'm not really sure how to set a reasonable rate, though. I don't want to gouge anyone, but I don't want to undersell my time, either.

Thanks again!

I paint for some freind too. Most of the time because I like the subject they are giving me. For the rate, most of the time I painted there HQ, I will bargain for something to complete my own army...like a tank, a squad of sapce marine or orks. pending on the job. I try to evaluate the price of the figurine x3 (space marine HQ 20$. For a good quality job, more that table top quality, I will charge 60$. So if he can find a good predator (value aroud 60$) for less, I am happy for him and happy for my.
Good job on the painting..

That's a really nice paint job so far - your clients should be extremely happy with what they've got for their money. For reference, I've painted a few things for mates, and I was paid:

For Lion El'Jonson (in my gallery) I was paid a Chaos Space Marine battleforce.
For building (converting/kitbashing) and painting an ork junka (like a big ork trukk with gubbins) I was paid 1 dire troll, 6 trollkin chaps with guns, a trollkin mortar, and gunnbjorn. Still not finished this yet.
For filling and pinning (and, admittedly, reposing, but that was me being a compulsive fiddler) a Parasite of Mortex (a flying tyranid thingy) I was paid 2 malifaux minis. (the initial comission was just pinning and filling, mind you.)
I also painted a custom built Corax in all-over OSL, but for the life of me I can't remember what I was paid.

As you can see, it varies, but as you can also see, its a damn sight more than 18 dollars, and that's for my friends. For straight up customers Id expect more (and have to work to strict deadlines. The big benefit of working for a mate is you can say up front "dude, this is gonna take ages, don't hold your breath" and they can walk away or say "aye, no problem." as they see fit.)

So yeah - this time around your clients can say "yay - we got a great paintjob for much cheapness" but next time, get paid for what you're worth, is my advice. As you say, though - painting a mini for a lot of enjoyment and a little cash is far preferable to doing it for a lot of money but being miserable while doing so.
