THE book just landed in my lap...

And this is the best GW publication since Lost and the Damned and Slave to Darkness.

About the best praise i can give it. Awesome. Magnificent. Spectacular. Epic

If you like gorgeous publications, well written background and lovely inspiring art go buy it.

Makes the normal GW books look and read like amateur work.

It costs 70 pounds...I would hope its a good book. Too pricey for me, saving up for an airbrush and that book is a 3rd of the price my airbrush setup will cost me o_O

It's not a regular paperback. ;) Looks quite exclusive. For something to that finish the price seems high but not outrageous regardless of topic.

Compared to say the new armybooks, the HH is much greater value. 300 pages of glory, just not art.

And the book is fashioned to look like old school lexica. If you are the slightest bit of a 40k fan, this will be like a bible...

I love 40k, primarily for the background art and writing. I still think 70quid for a book is offensively expensive for what amounts to a glorified codex. I appreciate its a well produced book, but wht if I just want to read the fluff then leave it on my bookshelf? Or, god forbid, if I'm a gamer who just wants rules for 30k? 70 quid is a helluva an outlay, and that's before I've even bought any minis. (it's probably worth mentioning I have no intention of playing 30k. Not enough eldar in it for my liking...)

Comparisons to RoC do make me perk up my ears and listen, but one has to bear in mind that RoC did not cost 70quid...

True, and I am not saying it isn't expensive but not offensively so.

Take the new chaos codex at 30£, that's offensively priced. Mostly reused fluff, rules and artwork. And to think the first hardcover army book was 22£ 18 months ago.....thats offensive.

And why would you the the fattydragon....its horrid:D

Mike that Magma Dragon does look nice in the flesh, I took a closer look at it in the cabinet and it appealed more to me then than when i first saw it. Still prefer and gonna get the basilisk though.

I've had the "how much" discussion a few times and actually it entirely depends upon how you look at it. It contains the rules for playing 30k games, the army list for playing legions, the rules for 4 specific legions along with some adeptus mechanicus bits. Add into this pages of fluff, some very clever composed miniature artwork, normal artwork, maps and then the pages of weathered armour and tanks there is a lot of content crammed into 300 pages.

If you look at it as "just another set of rules" because you're not actually interested in the background then it's a very expensive book. However if you're actually enthused by the whole Horus Heresy and going to spend time building up an army then it's quite reasonably priced. I actually think the fact it's a leather bound hard backed book with silver gilded pages you can see how Forge World are pitching it.

I've read to around page 66 currently and have only just got to the Sons of Horus section. Lots and lots of fluff without being a story.

Not sure I get it either. I get the Foxtrot Mike bit, But Papa? Must be an across the pond thing that doesn't translate into Yanklish.

Papa = Pink

A phrase sometimes used across this neck of the woods.
Also sometimes used as well F.M.Pink And Green.

Makes the normal GW books look and read like amateur work.

Most of their normal stuff is though. More so the writing. The art, well, some of the stuff lacks some refinement, Blanche's stuff sets the tone and atmosphere fanatically, although it isn't so good at conveying a clear idea of what you are looking at, but Paul Dainton is the Man.
Though paging through the new Chaos dex, I honestly felt that it was a mess, design-wise. For all the moaning about "losing the armory" it's a whole lot more intuitive to have all of a given model's upgrades and points right there in the entry.

On the price, I completely agree that it's a high quality product, but for someone who doesn't care about Space Marine Drama in general, and the HH specifically, the price just shuts it out from even a collector's viewpoint. You see one nicely rendered Imperial Power Armor, you've seen them all.
Granted I'm bitter and cynical and when I see a 70 pound book (that's number 1 of [until we stop]) needed to run an army that's a minimum of 82 pounds all I see is a cash-cow being set up. Anyway, I wonder how they'll model Lion El'Jonson. To my knowledge he's one of 3, I think, primarchs who haven't had an official depiction.
