evening guys and gals, this is wot iv been working on recently. although i have been using putty for a couple of years now its my first full sculpt and my first time using fimo. started off by working on the basics using cyril\'s bust tutorial, then as the chest started to devlop i quickly moved away towards futuristic house goliath look. i think the face is proberly the weakest part of it, u can see some of the anger, but its not entirely convincing, but having said that i am very happy with it.
comments and advice (especially about creating a more realistic face) would be great, and ill give u the cmon links so u guys can vote, thanks!

the lack of contrast makes it difficult to see the face so here are some larger pics

It\'s an ambitious project, but if you want a brutally honest analysis (and I know you do), your face sculpt didn\'t capture \"anger\" so much as \"constipation\".

First off, it\'s a tad tricky to make out details in it because of the lack of contrast in the image. Perhaps it\'s worth sorting that out for the submission because I think it\'s going to hinder people giving you in depth feedback.

It\'s certainly not a bad effort, particulalrly for a first attempt. As far as composition and the idea goes I like it a lot.

The basic sculpting technique looks to be pretty solid too as it\'s smooth and the details are fairly crisp.

If I had to identify the one thing that is holding it back, I\'d say it\'s that a lot of the shape to it is carved into a basic form, rather than gradually built up via layers of underlying bone structure and musculature, which is sucking the realism from it and making it look more cartoony. I\'ll repost a link here that was an awesome learning point for me when it came to improving how I constructed anatomy. Freeman\'s sculpting videos These are flipping awesome and should explain how to improve far better than a huge essay by me could!

As for the head, I have to agree that it\'s the weakest point, but heads are pretty tricky. I learnt the basics of sculpting heads from another awesome tutorial by Freeman on the Spanish Team Forum, but can\'t seem to locate it at the moment. It was a picture one rather than videos. Perhaps someone else knows the link. Once again, the thing I learnt from that was that it\'s vital to build the features gradually and logically. Little things like working the eyes deeper, getting the layout of the facial features so they are more realistic, that sort of stuff, I never really got the hang of it until I saw it logically broken down and shamelessly copied it a good few times!

Ultimately, it\'s a fine first attempt, you just need to practice, refine, practice, refine, etc.

cheers for the advice lono, i really struggled to bring out the shadows on the face, both with lighting and photoshop, so if u have any ideas on that it be great.

i agree theirs a lack of muscular and skeletal build ip, theirs about 3 or 4 layers at most in the mini as i find fimo difficult to work with in layers. after GDUK ill sit down work on a full green and ill will definitly be given those vids a watch, freeman is a very talented sculptor... damn my lack of spanish!

Also to add to the feedback here, I agree that it is a very ambitious project. But there are some issues really holding it back from being the best it can be:

  1. The face lacks depth - its basically an \"egg\" shape with things either tacked on or dug out
  2. Your facial proportion is off - a rule of thumb for eye spacing (and these are a shade close) is make the space the width as one eye. i.e., three eyes wide.
  3. No real jaw line definition (see 1)
  4. Your anatomy around the neck and just under the chest is suspect, and the back is effectively out of sync with the rest of the model. His front is defined and muscular, while his back just is there.
  5. Face again (sorry) - if you want to express anger, you are on the right track, but you need more here: The furrowed brow need more wrinkles and depth. the corners of the eyes should be brought down a bit (unless the high slant was what you are after) and the peak of the furrow (where the brows meet) should edge out over the inner corners of the eyes a bit. Also when folks are angry the outer corners of our top lip tend to curl up just a touch into a sneering effect. Also he kinda needs his ears lowered. The easiest way to affect all of this is keep a mirror near your scultping area and use it as a reference. I did all the time when I worked in comics.

cheers thunderhawker, this mini was a distraction from my GDUK entries rather than a serious \'project\'. ill sit down after the daemons and really look a human anatomy and make a more serious effort

yeah, get to know how muscle groups work and it will really help bring him alive.

i dont think that this is the tut for heads that lono was on about but it\'s bloody good anyway. keep plugging mate, it\'s better than my first try
