How about movies?

Having read the \'what\'re you reading?\' thread, I thought I\'d ask about movies... What\'ve you seen recently that you really liked, or really couldn\'t stand, or made you think?

I just saw \'Once upon a time in Mexico\' last night and loved every second of it - not your standard style movie, but very much a myth/legend kinda-thing. The title and the intro totally set the scene for it. It\'s like a movie of a story (the kind you tell people, rather than the kind you read).

It doesn\'t make typical narrative sense, but it\'s awesome if you can get away from that a bit - one of my friends hated it because of the lack of dialogue and logic. But then it\'s not that kind of movie (and he didn\'t like The Big Lebowski either, so has suspect judgement ) and it has Johnny Depp, who looks disturbingly good at a point toward the end of the movie.

Desparately trying to remember the last (non-kid) movie I\'ve seen, it\'s been sooo long my kids\' favorites are Jonah, a vegitales movie, and Ice Age. Both of which got another viewing today

The last movie i went to the theater to see (besides LoTR:RotK) was 28 Days Later... I really enjoyed it. Very spooky.

Last thing I watched that was a first-timer (ie, hadn\'t seen it before) was The Green Mile (read the book when it was being serialized, but never got around to watching the movie until a month or so ago). Saw ROTK again two weeks ago.

But, the big movie blitz is about to start here in the States...so that will soon change. Hellboy, Punisher, Harry Potter 3, Van Helsing, King Arthur, Shrek 2, The Incredibles, Spider-Man 2, Troy....*sigh* going to be a nice summer.......

I went to see Twisted in theaters a few days ago. I deserve my life back for that one.

Oh, and Alice is always a great movie....and as soon as I find it I will own Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory.:flip::bouncy:

oo, upcoming movies - I\'d forgotten how many I\'m looking forward to! This last year\'s been a bit of a drought as far as good movies go (except for ROTK, woot!). I still haven\'t seen Big Fish, although it\'s definitely on the list.

I\'m looking forward to Van Helsing, Resident Evil: Apocalypse, Troy, HP3, and the second part of Kill Bill (although I didn\'tget around to seeing part 1 while it was still in regular theatres - I think in Wellington it\'s gone to only showing in wierd little boutique theatres).

I\'m not planning on seeing the Passion movie - a) I know how it ends , b)not the least bit religious c) annoyed by all the surrounding controversy, including minor but daft stuff like the local \'community standards\' group :|~ wanting the R16 rating lowered so more kids could see it... these are the people who got Baise Moi banned so it couldn\'t be shown at the film festival a couple of years back. Not that I would\'ve gone to see it, but I\'d have liked the option. It was already R18, why ban it?

Don\'t know about Hellboy, I found the comics really hard to get into, but the idea is cool enough that if it\'s made by good people (eg Spiderman/X-men rather than the Hulk/Daredevil )...

I really liked 28 Days Later - went to see it on my birthday last year. Scared the bejesus out of me (I\'m so bad at scary movies) but I enjoyed it enormously. It felt a lot like Day of the Triffids (the book - I haven\'t seen the tv series).

My own recent viewing include:
various Wiggles vids,
Teletubbies, High-5, Spot,
Bananas in Pajamas, the best of Bert and Ernie,
Finding Nemo (this is a favourite, not mine-hers), Ice Age,
Barbie in the Nutcracker/Swan Lake/Rapunzel
And a whole bunch of DVDs in Japanese and Chinese (and a few in Korean) that the gf brought back from visiting her parents.

This is, of course, the only time I get to watch the TV.

Well, the best new film I\'ve seen recently was the straight to dvd release of The Lion King 3 Hakuna Matata. It is very funny!

On the subject of RotK, it comes out on DVD in may (spec ed will be later). IIRC this is a lot earlier that the other two came out on DVD

Actually, I reckon the last thing I saw at the cinema was RotK, the day after it came out, shows how often I go

The last film I went and saw was Looney Tunes.....Don\'t ask, I don\'t have kids......

Before that it was Kill Bill, now that was worth seeing in the cinema! Love the soundtrack, and can\'t wait for the next one to come out

I do like a good film, but I hate going to the cinema....English cinemas are crap. They used to be called \'flea pits\', a fact that I fully didn\'t appreciate until I came home with lice once.
Gotta agree with Darth on the Green Mile. A brilliant movie.
I really loved Toy Story, but to be honest I thought Ice age was a crock and I fell asleep watching Finding Nemo.
American Beauty is a beauty.
Donnie Darko is well worth watching. Glad to see it got a second lease of life.
The first two LOTR are great although I haven\'t seen ROTK yet as it isn\'t out on DVD.
Dune...I must be one of the only people in the world who appreciates this film. Possibly my all-time favourite.
Titanic...utter sh*t as is anything with idiot-face in. My brain refuses to remember his name

Titanic is watchable, only for the scenery. The story itself is shit, but you gotta be impressed with the recreations of the ship and the sinking.

Ice Age was a piece of junk.

Never seen Dune or Donnie Darko. My DD movie is Daredevil.

My greatest impression of a Brit movie house are the scenes from American Werewolf in London, but that\'s probably not the same kinda movie house.

That movie scared the hell out of me as a kid, and it still freaks me out to this day.

Braveheart still qualifies as my all time favorite.

If I was a Christian, I\'d have a hard time turning the other cheek for these clowns, but as an atheist I merely have to remind myself that they\'re not really a representative sample... *ahem*, ON TOPIC, I\'ve recently seen The Triplets of Belleville (excellent but bizarre), For a Few Dollars More (classic), 21 Grams (heart- and gut-wrenching), and My Life Without Me starring the excellent Sarah Polley. Looking forward to Bubba Ho-Tep, I know it\'s out already but not here... And I also want to see The Corporation, a documentary about how if corporations were people, most of them would be sociopaths. I actually liked the first Resident Evil (the DVD commentary with Milla and Michelle Rodriguez was great!), so maybe the sequel will be worthy too.

finn, what do you mean, USED to be called flea pits? they generally still are. although i fing the ucg cinemas a quite good (cheap and good leg room).

28 days later is brilliant (mind you any film would be if it had manchester as a smouldering pile of rubble!). pirates is great, jonny depp is the man - also very good in once upon a time in mexico (although i wasn\'t too keen on the film).

bought underworld on dvd. thought it was gonna be crap but was actually ok. is it me or are the vampires quite weak in the film?

looking foreward to kill bill 2, van helsing and spiderman2. and the last star wars whenever thats out
