How Conceptual can you get for a GD?

I doubt this will be all that helpful, as it\'s still rather vague, but here\'s a quote from the GDLA 2005 Golden Demons page:

As always the judges will be looking for models that are well painted and well presented. In addition, special attention will be paid to how well the model fits into the published concepts of our game backgrounds. This isn\'t to say that creativity will not be rewarded, but it must be conveyed in the atmosphere and spirit of the worlds our games represent.

That is so there aren\'t any more brilliant, but, unscorable pieces like that guy who painted the demon with Christian iconography all over it. Bummer- but, they were not able to award anything for the piece.:(
He was from France if I remember right. Its late;)

Sounds like a great idea. I wouldn\'t expect the cretins that judge the GD\'s to appreciate it though......

More interested in advertising....
The problem with great conceptual ideas is that they have to get past GW staff. Some of which can\'t get past the \"Drybrushing is the pinnacle of painting\" mentality.
Using a Creative image like that which is hinted at might not make it past their limited criteria........................But try it you might get a \'selector\' with some sense.

Hey sometimes the whole thing is a crap shoot.

No sorry that was Victor Harvey at UK\'s GD 2004 getting told \"Sorry we can\'t afford to p**s off the catholic clergy.\" Great paintwork just not really suitable for GW\'s ethos.

actually it was Victor Hardy.. :) Looked really neat from the small pictures I saw. It was sad that he didn\'t see it coming.. :( But he said that he\'ll repaint it and enter it again.. I hope he does!

Thanks for the point at the right dude/ country Dragon/ Avelorn;)
Too true about overdone hightlighted drybrushing being a fixture with some of those folks\' idea of cool....arrggh. Fur would be appropriate I guess.
Yes, nice paintings are not in the scope/education of some of theses guys.

Eric, your idea sounds brilliant! Why don\'t you just make two duel entries, one more traditional and then this one? I mean, yeah, it\'s about winning demons, but isn\'t GD also a great way to show off your skills? Even if you don\'t win? People here are still talking about Victor Hardy\'s entry, right?

i know this technically isn\'t a WIP thread but.....

this is an idea that i am playing around with in what little time i get to paint. if it turns out well i might take it to the french GD. the problem is conversions on lotr minis........technically i have not converted anything (that unless you count me modifying his base) but i\'m unsure iff i\'ll come unstuck with judging.

Wow, definately very cool idea and well done so far, the sculpt lends itself to it perfectly.

Joshua, that\'s kind of what I was worried about, whether you strictly needed 2 minis to qualify as a duel.

I think if you had a cool idea you should go ahead and do it, and worry about category later. Traditionally there has been a Battle Scene category which doesn\'t limit the number of figures. For some reason they eliminated it here in the states this year (don\'t know about UK) and switched to Duel. Looking back at rules in old White Dwarfs they clearly limit a duel to two figures.

No matter what, your entry would always be eligible for the Open category, although that precludes you from winning the Slayer Sword.

Hope this helps,

Medved, that\'s an awesome idea. I agree on the lava bubbles, and you are going to do OSL, aren\'t you?

OSL help!

i\'m going to try! but not really sure how to. as you mat see i am working from a white undercoat and painting in the shading rather than highlighting (messes with the brain) i know gollum is a pinky/grey colour but to have him too light would not work well against all that orange! so maybe an exageration to a more blue shade like in the screen shots?
anybody got any good colour schemes for his skin?
