How do I get my miniatures to 'pop' and take the step from basic to better?

hino being worked on now. Awful picture, but I think I'm getting some of the elusive contrast into the fur? thoughts and advice always welcome. I may start a WIP, think it makes more sense doesn't it?

Saetan is starting to look better ,it could still be pushed now more into the shadows and deeper ripples, the rhino looks as if you have lightened the fur but no contrast , now try deepening shadows and contours of the body with a few washes and glazes , bring it in darker next to the armour , then high light the edge of the armour to really differentiate the two different elements . The difference in painting is definitely there.
