How do i simulate scaly skin and paint rotting wounds?

And i wanted to hear if anyone know how to simulate scaly skin (like the artwork) as it isn´t sculpted in the miniature itself.
Also there are a lot of sculpted wounds on the miniature itself, some of them has muscle and bone in them, others are just surface wounds.
I wanted to know how can i paint them realistically so they look like they are rotting?

i am mostly using vallejo colors.

For scales you could try using an airbrush stencil. I've seen Karol Rudyk do that for scales on his beasts. You can see the stencil at the bottom of the image below. I'm not sure what it is, some sort of plant material. Someone else might be able to point you in the right direction.

Another thought might be to do a thin layer of softened greenstuff (or milliput or whatever), an then use a moistened sponge to "texture" areas and then paint to look like scales.

You could also try these: http://www.fallouthobbies.com/stencils/ look under the texture/pattern (dragon type scales) or maybe the Organik (as that has reptile skin patterns) section on stencils they have some scale ones within the stencil. I know it is mostly for airbrushing, but might be able to use a brush at least for limited parts. And some of their patterns are really small

Use an old handkerchief (cotton) form a tight pad/bulb to use for dabbing the paint gently over your stencil. just noticed the bit about rotting wounds, i keep a small tin of clear gloss varnish (normal house hold stuff) paint the wound as normal then coat with the gloss varnish it gives it the wet look you expect from a weeping bleeding wound.

Yep and the dude who runs fallout is a real standup guy! You could totally use those with some stippling or heavy drybrushing or wet brushing.

Does Fallout ship to Europe/Denmark?

Also two side questions could Crackle medium create "beliverble" scales (maybe give it a wash afterwards) or would it end up looking silly?
Also how would you go about painting the birds head so it looks like the picture?
I tried with a Tan (VGC) gave it a wash of army painters purple and soft tone, and then drybrushed it with Tan and then 1/1 mix Tan and Dead White.
Didn´t really think it looked dark or juicy enough like it does in the picture.
I could imagine that perhaps a Tan basecoat and then a Dark Flesh wash or sibling might do it, but i´m not sure.

You could use crackle medium but it probably wouldn't look realistic for a smaller scale mini. I use crackle medium extensively in art projects and even the products I have that are claimed to be fine crackle often tend not to be or are difficult to work with. Another problem is that to get a relatively uniform crack you also need to apply it fairly thickly which may obscure detail. From my experience no two brands behave in the same way so you could always try it. There are crackle mediums made by Vallejo etc but I have never tried this one.
I have used stencils very similar to those Karol has used although again only for other art projects. These I have found for free while spear fishing along the beach. Unfortunately in Australia.
I'm not sure if Woodland Scenics is still in business but you could cut some of the lichen they sell for vegetative scenery until you get finer flat sections. It would not be identical to Karol's stencil but might be useable.
