easiest for snow is micro ballons and pva, just mix it into a toothpaste consistancy.
apply in thin layers letting each layer dry.

by loading a brush with water you can thin down certain spots before it sets allowing groundwork to poke through representing melting snow.

just let each layer set as this allows you to build up a more realistic finish.
lastly, for any areas that you want a fresh untouched snow look then add a thin layer and then sprinkle micro balloons onto it.

for an icy finish, as matt suggested, crushed up glass is effective.
for icicles you can use water effects and tease it as it sets but for anybody who can\'t be arsed faffing with that (like me!) then give jeff (dragonforge design) a shout as he does plastic icicles, just cut off the strip and glue in place (so easy it could have been made by siflor!)

I´m curious about this way of using them (I haven´t tried them yet) - does this make the snow sort of \"bloppy\" like I often see with snoweffects?

I´m looking for a way to make the snow \"windswept\" for lack of a better word, and on a lot of the snowbases around the snow is applied in a more clump-like fashion which makes it look more like it´s thawing.

The manual says that it should be sprinkled on top of layers of glue - is there any noticeable change in the end-result when making a paste (it seems easier, simpler and safer than doing it the other way)

I\'m pretty sure the paste effect, no matter how it is done will give you the thawing/clumpy look you\'re not after. What you could do is perhaps make the paste -for volume- then sprinkle your snow effect on top. Are you looking for

-smooth glass like really windswept drifts?
-flurries, kind of blown about but not much accumulation?
-Large amounts of deep light snow that isn\'t melted at all?

I\'d like to hear how people do different effects. I\'m looking to do a \"Jon Snow\" fro the Song of Ice and Fire series on a deep light snow base, possibly with a few footprints and not much else.

Currently what I would\'ve done is make a paste from about 1:1 white glue to woodland scenics snow scatter, apply it to the base then scatter the snow effect on the top.

Love to hear more about this.

without the thinned out bits to make the groundwork show through you get a pretty reasonable result with micro balloons and pva.

it\'s about building it up in layers just like how nature does it.

Bleh - computer ate my long reply :/

Anyways to cut it short - the effect I´m looking for is the flurry kind of snow with very little accumulation except in nooks and crannies and where there is lee.

The mini is sculpted with a cloak that flaps in the wind, and I really want the base to reflect this --->clumpy snow won´t work.

However after looking at the base it seems like it might work if I do a lot of really thin layers - just out of curiosity, how many layers have you used there?

that was three layers with micro balloons sprinkled on top of the last layer.

the trick is not to make the layers realy thick, if need be water the mix down slightly.
you can then always add an extra layer if need be.
