How do you get cloth to look old?

I am currently painting a brown sash.
I want to create the feel that th emini is old and has worn the sash a long time, and it has been through a lot of wear, and battles.

Does anyong have any idea as to how I go about ageing/weathering it.

Blood marks, rips etc?

Highlight it up to cream, ivory, or white, then use your finest brush to streak in a thin cross stitching pattern. Like the number sign: #

remember that blood stains a ruddy brown. really thin out the selected stain color and then apply it in drops and allow it to air dry. the watermarks can look like stains. also, unlike standard hilighting, make sure to lighten areas that would receive more wear and tear (knees etc). the hilighting should be soft, and textured (with the afore mentioned cross hatching).

put some rips in it with that tromp whatever technique.

add some crosshatching around the bottom of it to represent it getting scuffed up more than higher up parts.

a couple of thin white glazes on raised areas to create hotspots of light.

should take 15 mins or so.

When I do aged and worn cloth I usually mix some grey into it. Then I apply the final highlights in a crosshatch pattern, but with very thin paint so the actual pattern is hardly visible. It gives the highligts a dull and faded look though, and that is what I\'m after.

I\'ve used this technique on this mini, for instance:

I did the basic shading/highlighting with wet-blending, creating smooth light-to-dark transitions at first, but keeping the highlights a bit darker than I want them to look when complete. Then I started layering slightly lighter highlights using very thin paint (almost completely transparent) and applying it in a crosshatch pattern. When the paint dried I applied another and then another layer and so on, gradually making them lighter. This creates a worn and faded look to the highlights, while still being quite smooth. Finally, I applied some more visible crosshatch patterns here and there to make the cloth look coarse. The shaded areas was given a couple of different-coloured glazes to make the cloth look stained, but I kept it away from the brightest areas.

I have done a bit moe work to the cloth and its looking very similar to the Dark Paladin.
I think what is spoiling it at the moment, is the mass of unfinished work around it??? Think I need more glazes in the recesses though.
