How do you guys paint helmet/gun skulls?

I tried to do a diluted black ink wash over a white skull, and while it looked amazing while the ink was wet, when it dried it looked absolutely horrible. What techniques are best for painting skulls?

I paint them snake bite (mid brown) add bone and do a high light ad bone etc till its straight bone. Then I do spot high lights in white. You CAN drybrush but I find this makes the skull look too chalky. Hope that helps.

I paint the deep areas black (eyes ect) then an off white base coat. Ink wash (flesh wash) the whole thing then highlight with whites. I like to dry brush cause bone is suppose to look kinda pitted and rough.

I\'ve done a few skulls recently and this is the method I ended up using:
start with a dark grey or brownish colour;
lightly build up using a beige or light stone colour in thin layers;
add in a little white for the last few layers;
finally do a couple of highlights in pure white (fairly thinly).

If I think it needs it I might give bone a very light glaze of a tan colour to give it that \'aged bone\' look.

drybrushing is fine for gun type skulls. as wrestlerguy says, a slightly chalky look doesn\'t look bad with bones. mind you keep your paint fairly watered down so it\'s not too grainy.

The skulls I\'ve done that I like the most, I did as follows: (GW colours named here)

- Primer: White
- Flesh Wash the whole thing
- Fill in eyes/holes with either Chaos Black or Vermin Brown (depending on colour scheme of surrounding paints).
- Bleached Bone
- Highlight with Skull White

But, we all have our own methods.

Well, I actually paint them metallic gold so I don\'t think you want my advice.

actually for stuff on armour and weapons, i never paint actual skull colours. i tend to go for metallics
