Hard.

Drake, Stirling, Gibson, Heinlien, Niven, Pournelle, Flint, et al.

Really almost prefer \"hard boiled\".lol

Battlestar Galactica (not the Lorne Green one) ... nice and dark.

Aliens, Bladerunner, Star Wars, Mad Max, 2001... all good stuff

Not terribly arsed about 40k to be honest.

I\'d start with Iain M Banks\' first Sci-fi book Consider Phlebas. It\'s a bit more direct than his other stuff, but it\'s a cracking read. He\'s a class act.

Sorry if we\'re confusing people over the fiction and sci-fi - he writes as Iain Banks for fiction and Iain M Banks for sci-fi. He\'s just a damned good writer.

Yep Same here Started with Verne & Wells migrated onto Asimov, Clarke, Van Vogt, Dick, Heinlien, Niven and Steele.
Now these are all the \"Classical Space Opera\" stars of SF, but some of the greatest SF subtle writing has been done by the Female authors, Ursula K Le Guin, Vonda N McIntyre, Lisa Tuttle, Gwynneth Jones, Kate Wilhiem and Octavia E Butler. (Kindred is a Must Read on any SF fans list, I pictured the actress Gloria Reuben as the main protagonist).

Like Reverend I like Iain M Banks\'s SF but I find that afterwards I need to read something \"Light\" as his envisioned world(s) do leave me feeling as if the whole thing is just some tiny insignificant cog in a vast cosmos spanning and remote machanism.

I\'ve stopped reading the 40K books as (outside from Dan Abnett) theres nothing of interest in them for me any longer.

As for a previous mention of Ian Watson, having met him, I can never read any of his books again.

I\'ve just finished watching part one of the final season. It\'s been incredibly well done all the way through. Had a few lulls with episodes of padding that could have been culled, but I guess that\'s to be expected in a TV series.

Just a pain that we\'ve got to wait for the final few episodes. And buy 2 lots of DVDs for the final series. Money grabbing gits!

Another shout for Iain Banks here as well...

I think that\'s why I like them so much. It\'s the sheer scope that draws me in and it\'s all the more tantalising because of the glimpses of the whole we get from the books. In my opinion, the most attractive feature someone can have is a good imagination.
