How do you make a diorama?

I want to make a battle scene for Games Day but Im not sure how to go about doing it. Like, should I make the base first? then pin\\glue the models on? And what should I do about a base? Just use the pink stuff? And where do you get those wooden base things with the name tags? In one sentence, what steps do you take to make a diorama?
