How do you paint eyes?

Hi painters!

I\'m new to this forum and I\'d like to know
how you paint good looking eyes.

What kind of trick do you use?
e.g. a pen, a special brush, or what ever.

Any ideas?

Best Regards,
Sven

the trick is ...

I use micron pen 005 for painting eyes and I always paint eyes first before I paint the face.

My best eyes are #4307 (Ogre) and #3460 (Crappy Barbarian) In both cases the eyes are on the larger side, so I was able to have a bit more fun. They\'re painted before most of the highlighting for the face; perhaps after a quick drybrush. I paint the whole eye white, followed by a colored dot (Blue for the Ogre, green for the Barbarian) and finish with a small black pupil. I also use a small vallejo brush and magnifying glasses to do it...

I paint the whole eye black, and then try to paint white dots at the sides, making adjustments to the pupil as needed.

I usually paint the eyes as first thing in a miniature (in this way I can see if the miniature is happy for the paint scheme.. you know.. eyes are the soul of a miniature ;o)
I paint an horizontal white line trying to stay in the eye sockets, then trim with black all the errors and next paint a vertical line in the middle of the eye (or near one side if I want to archieve a different look).
Then I start painting the skin and trim the eye leavig a very small black line under the eye.

Using the ASCII characters...

_____
_____ paint a white line

___
<___> trim the eye with black

___
<_|_ > paint a vertical black line

I recommend you get Vallejo brush sets. New Wave has both sets in stock. The 4/0 or 2/0 are perfect for painting eyes with.

As for methods I use Errex\'s way of doing eyes I find it easier to do.

Painting Eyes... a reply

Well... here\'s how I paint the eyes on my figs (the ones without helmets that is, lol)

Firstly, I almost always use a white primer on models with large areas of flesh, or models with bare heads, as it\'s easier to get a good effect for the fleshy tones... and to give the model more depth (IMHO). Then, with a watered down black, I paint \'racoon eyes\' on the face. This dries, then go in with your white, and paint the eyeball part completely, leaving a thin (very thin) line of black around the edge of the eye. After this is dry, go back in with the black, or a dark blue, or suitable color for the model\'s pupil, and paint a small dot. It\'s best to leave the dot not quite touching the bottom of the eyeball (so in other words, don\'t paint a \'stripe\' down the center of the eyeball. Some people will say this makes you models look like they are staring or whatever, but it works best for me. After all, any method someone will give you for painting facial details will make the model look like its staring, because, well, it is. minis are basically small statues, right?

Maybe down the road I\'ll run a stage-by-stage on this, so the effect can be better demonstrated (most likely this will happen once I get around to actually posting a few pics on the site, anyhow... I\'m lazy, lol).

I usually paint in scorched brown the face (base colour for the skin), then paint the eyes in chaos black, add a thin white line with the thinnest brush I have and finally add a perpendicolar line to make the pupil. when I paint the face a cover mistakes and black paint out of the eye and the effect is preatty realistic with little effort:)
