How do you use Future, and Gloss Medium

Finally found some Future Floor Wax locally and picked up a bottle. Now I\'m a bit lost on exactly how to use it. Along with this a while back I picked up some Vallejo Gloss Medium. Not certain how to use that either.

I know that you add Future to your paints so that it breaks the surface tension and helps with things like paint rings, etc. I also know that the medium is a good way to thin down paints without messing up the consistancy.

What I don\'t know is what ratio to use either of these things, and how exactly to phyically use them when painting. Do you just pour a small cup of future and have it next to your water pot, and take a brush full from there when mixing paints? Do you add it to a dropper bottle? Just not sure the Logistics of it.

Well, for me at least, Future has two uses.

First, it helps if your paints start to dry out a bit. I have a good number of those horrid old GW bottles so I have to ritually open them up and a squirt of Future and a squirt of water and they\'re good as new.

Second, for I use Future for washes, especially panel line washes. For that I use about one brush\'s worth of paint, about 10-15 drops of future and about 5-10 drops of water. It\'s really nice and thin and controllable at that kind of ratio for me.

I use it in a pre-shade wash to break the surface tension of the water.

I use it for regular washes to break the surface tension.

I use 2 coats of it straight after I\'m done as a gloss varnish and then put 1 coat of dullcote to knock off the shine.

I also use it with a drop or two of food color to tint clear windshields. A bath in that will not only make it super shiny, but can make it any color you want.

Love the stuff. And one bottle will last just about forever.

Awesome info. Thanks for that.

I\'m still lost as to how to actually use the stuff though. How can I word this better. Do I just open up the Giant Bottle and squese out a drop of the stuff? Do I pour some onto my pallet and use it from there. Do I put some in a cup like my water and use that? Do I put some into a paint pot?

I\'ve got this giant jug of the stuff, and I can\'t see just dipping my brushes into that. I was looking to find out how other people use it logistically.

I\'m glad to learn some other practical painting uses for it as well though.

For a Varnish, just squirt some on the palette and paint it straight on. I tend to airbrush it on straight in the cup.

For a wash, I make up a \'magic wash\'. It\'s 1/4 a container full of Future and 3/4 full of regular water. This breaks the surface tension and allows paints and inks to sink into the recesses of the figure.

To tint a windshield, just pour the future straight into a container, add a couple drops of food color and submerge the windshield into the mix and put it on a paper towel to dry.

If you want to take off Future, just spray Windex or rubbing alcohol on it. It\'ll come right off.

That\'s the info I was looking for, thank you.

Should be trying it out this weekend, pending some type of unexpected family obligation.
