How does one accomplish this foliage and vine affect?

I want to make a diorama of a ruined temple and I want to strewn it with foliage affects like on this base:

I have made my one tiles out of plaster and will hand carve them to be weathered and broken and I want to have vines and foliage like on the basework above protruding and wrapping around columns and such.

Suggestions?
The more advanced the better.

Well the leaves are birch seeds available from a few suppliers:
Antenociti's workshop for one: www.barrule.co.uk

The vine can be made from fine wire or greenstuff or if you fancy a bit of gardening you can get dried plant roots.

Actually the "leaves" are the Birch Catkin Scales which protect the seeds :smile-big:
