How is the minis averaged?

Does the scoring takes the total score divided by the number of voters?

If so, can I suggest somewhat a weighted average?

Take for instance, a person who normally gives 9 on all minis averaged at 5 will receive a lower weightage to his rating status.

Another way is by way of ranking. Have a rank status and those who are deem more expert should carry more weight to his ranking as compared to a casual painter.

Somehow, I ran through several minis and the ranking given by those who voted doesn\'t seem to tally at all... ???

hmmm . . I actually prefer the democratic - one person-one vote thing . . encouraging elitism doesn\'t really fly with me in regards to voting here.
Not that you\'re doing that, but having votes that are worth more than someone else\'s seems unfairly heirarchical - and unneccesary . . .

However, who sits in the panel of judges for golden demon?

how about american idol? Besides the public opinions and votes, the judges are there too (eg. Lionel Richie) to provide their professional opinions and votes.

I read many threads and it seem that several minis are either given too low scores (eg. cost of not using NMM) or too high (just an average piece of job) a rating.

We come together here to share our hobbies and spent time together with people of likemind. To showcase our pride and joy and hopefully gain insights into what we have done right (again, our pride and joy) and what we have done wrong so as to learn from it (nevertheless, also our pride and joy). But if opinions are not constructive, and ratings are just not accurate, narrow-minded people who cannot accept critisism aside, then this scoring is seriously a white elephant (hmm..or red herring).

Anyways, just my two cents worth. Maybe there can be a public scoring and a more stringent scoring with such an weighted averaging.

PS: sometimes, it bothers me that some minis like Bobby Wong, Chrispy, Honda or Victoria (and many more ) can be ranked similiarly with other less deserving pieces. No offence intended.

Yes... It is an average of all score submitted for that mini.

My understanding is that when you leave a Comment it does not actually log the score you give the mini, the page refreshes and then you have to actually vote to apply your score.

Oddly, so far, in all the time I have been here I don\'t think I have seen a comment left by Bobby Wong, Victoria, or Jen Haley. Just an observation, not a criticism, but then I haven\'t been through all 14,000 plus images. lol

It can\'t be accurate, it\'s all opinion, there is very little that is subjective about voting and Art. We are engaged in a Art form that can\'t be boiled down to numbers. The voting is really just to give you a feel for how your fellow artists \"feel\" about your work. It is just a guage of the community sentiment, not a real value of the work, only you can determine that, when you look at your Art or the Art of others.

Averaging system

Hello, while I am all in favor of the democratic system, some filtering of the extremes could be an improvement to take away some of the angry or partisan voting.
My idea is based off the way skating comptetitions work: 10 judges vote, the highest and lowest votes are discarded and the rest is averaged. Here, due to the amount of votes, the 5 or 10 % highest and lowest could be taken away and the average taken from the rest.
This still gives a significant vote to everyone but prevents people from lowering the score too much by giving a 1 on a mini which everybody scores at 9.
Not that this would happen to me since no one in his right mind would give me a 9, but if I show the site to my grandmother, she will give me 10s and I do not think this is fair either.

Does anybody agree that some sort of \'median filtering\' could be a good thing?

I agree it\'s a good thing, and I\'m pretty sure Chern thinks it a good thing because this system already does something like that.

Meta-moderating the Mode

Slashdot has Meta-moderating where people mod the rankings of other people.
Another mechanism is to have people rank fair and unfair to the people who vote on their minis, giving 2 votes to anyone with a positve karma, and half a vote to people whith bad karma.
Which brings me to...
One person one vote is over at 100 if not earlier. At that point you need 10 or more people to average you an entire point higher just to gain 1 tenth of one percent.
Or show the MODE (most common) score given. I like this the best.
Or reset the average every 100, making the 100 just one vote in the next set.
