how long to sculpt

Ok, last night I made my first attempt at sculpting a model. It was a dwarf. I was surprised at what a small amount of sculpey I actually used. I kept have to take away and take away.

Anyway, the thing took me forever and I was wondering how long most of you who sculpt -WHOLE MODELS- take? Not conversions and not gigantic monsters. Just, how long does it take you to sculpt a single figure from scratch?

i\'ve been doing some scratchbuilding lately, just to try and practice doing robes etc. i\'ve tried a few familiars/scollbearers for 40k inquisitor stuff. they are not that detailed or big so they only took me a week or two doing only 30 mins or so a day. but my sculpting generally sucks - i intend to put some on cmon as soon as i have painted them (maybe next week)

The 54mm Sisters of Battle I did both took over 20 hours each. Part of the time is the wait for the green stuff to harden enough to add more to the figure and spreads the total working time out where you can only do so much per session. 35mm stuff I\'ve done is a bit quicker, what it really comes down to is good tools and a plan to build the figure. I can sculpt faster in clay, but its not really suitable for doing figures that small.

I\'m coming to a much deeper respect for folks who do their own sculpting. The dwarf I made took me about 2 to 3 hours of straight work. His face turned out wonderfully, except for the fact that I didn\'t add ears, I didn\'t want to ruin what I had. However, his body was very bland. He looks like he\'s wearing a sweat-shirt. I expected that it would be the other way around. I guess I paid more attention to the face because I expected it to be hard.

Anyway, I won\'t just skip the greens anymore. This crap is a lot harder than I expected it to be.

Tabithatan: I actually commented on your LOTR scene. I thought it was very well done.

Garyo: Those figures were quite nice. I especially liked the one that is posted unpainted. The face on that one is great.

I\'ll be makin a scene in a mage tower next... only problem with it is.. size and how to paint marble.......
