For the most part, I\'d think aim for 10-ish. For larger models (like, say Terminators) you could probably go 5-ish. That\'s not \'official\' though.

basically get a friend who has a codex for the army/squad you are thinking about.
bare minimum is generally 3 models (grey knights)

Just once I\'d like to see someone walk in with the max number of models possible. How many clanrats would that be? I\'m thinking 30+ models.
Anyways.. I say 5 for 40k and larger fantasy (ie, cavalry, or large unitforming monsters), and probably 10 for most fantasy regiments, as well as some of the smaller 40k units (guardsmen, kroot).

Its 5, or the basic minimum for a unit. Could be three in the case of ogryns or something like that.
40K it is a leader and 4 troopers..this could be a command squad or a small 5 man squad.
WFB its leader, standard, musician and 2 troopers.
Go with that and you will be ok.
Also they arent THAT anal about it. It just needs to be a cohesive unit that makes sence. So for example 5 darkangels that mak sence together good unit.. 3 dark angels and 2 orks..bad unit.

It still depends. Yes, the GD rules are a little flexible and you can do something odd and still win, but some of what people have said here, particularly about Warhammer, is a little too flexible as far as I\'m concerned. 5 man regiments for Warhammer for example, is going to be too small in many cases (not only a rules point of view, but also in fitting the fluff as Warhammer\'s about decent sized regiments).
It strikes me that you should try and learn as much about the background and rules of any squad/regiment that you are considering doing as an entry to maximise your chances. You can bend these rules sensibly if you know them. If you don\'t you could do something out of character in the choices or size.
Head into a store and check the Codex/Army book perhaps if you want to maintain ultimate secrecy?
I own all of the Codecies and Army books and could PM you some details if you want. I already know what I\'m doing for GD so I\'m not going to steal.

The golden demon rules state that minimum number of models you can enter for squad or regiment is the minimum gaming unit,,if however this unit numbers less than 5 models, then it is not allowed.
so to summarise very simply,,,,5 minimum as long as this is still within the gaming recquirements

Last year\'s 40K Silver squad in Atlanta had only 4 figures:

Looking at the US Rules, the only spec I can see says 40K squads must be at least 3 models and game legal. Fantasy only references game legal, with no mention of a number of figures as minimum.
