The invasion part...

was something lots of GD attenders were saying and mad about, not my personal opinion... The French entries were indeed very cool, the 40K Ork Nob, wow, and i totally dig the Lucrezia conversion (Slayer Sword winner)! I honestly wish I could ever do so well... Sad fact is, most of the folks weren\'t quite the sportsmen one would hope... lots of booing and stuff when the French guys got the Demons... on the other hand, they boo when Franz Sander gets a Demon, too, so I wouldn\'t blame it on nationalism... :D

@tammy: actually, there is a staff category on its own, so I\'m not that sure about that one... They do give out awards for costumes since... 2001, when a couple folks in skaven costumes got bronze in open cat... well, as long as it ads some color to the GD (pun not intended) And btw, \'grats, you freak!

yeah those \"booers\" are assholes .... don´t understand them and their behaviour. I know that the thing with Franz started as a small joke and wasn´t meant bad, but what those guys do now is just ridiculous.


I think the reason behind the titans winning nothing was the fact, that they were painted quite poor. They looked stunning from distance, but seens from a nearer point it was obvious that they needed another year to be finished ;)

about the use of other companies bits, i think that the GD judges must be tolerant if there are just one pieces, or little pieces. obviously a model heavily converted with non GW stuff must the refused (don\'t forget it\'s a company competition, to promote the range). i remerber a piece at last french GD, technicaly it was good enough to get a demon...but with a lot of rackham stuff on it..don\'t make the first cut, one of the judge said: \"too much rackham pieces\".

in france there is a good rule, any slayer sword winner could only enter in one category...

for me GD are international and meeting between painters from several countries are good. i went to Uk GD, spain, german and french GD of course. and this year in france some spanish and english painters were present...so i hope next year will be the same with german painters too?

Goatman: i think you could enter your diorama in \"prestige\" category if it\'s too large for diorama category...

I agree with all those, (goatman, tammy etc.) the GD is for me like a olympic game, taking part is the main thing, see and meet other painters, to get inspiried by those beautiful works. Sure, we also done \"only\" final-cut (it is not a shame to stay in the second range in this i.m.o. hardest contest at a german GD), sure I was dreaming about riding the sorceress to a demon, but there will be a next GD next year and I hope the \"frech invasion\" (what a terrible word) come back to a re-match !!!!!
Sorry for my poor english, but I`m a little bit wrong about such diskussions how \"this is our GD, french invasino and so. The main thing by this hobby for me is, e more internationals come together, e more fun !!!!

It is amazing how insular some people are. Not that the Canadian GD has the same draw as in Europe, but there were some Americans here. This year there was a huge jump in the quality of the top end entries. I am not saying that it was simply \"outsiders\" that brought up the level of competition, but rather our exposure to the work of artists the world over. It is funny, it is because of one of those...Angela Imrie that I ended up here. I looked her up on Google, found her website and voila. It does not matter to me where you are from. I am simply grateful to be able to see the work and inspiration of anyone who is pushing their talent and the art form.

To be inspired....to work hard at developing a talent...to be judged...it may lead to a temporary disappointment but hopefully the strength of character of the individual will come through and they will be motivated to stretch and grow and improve their skills.

Case in point...someone at the Canadian GD who will remain nameless whose beastherd made the cut....I need to improve ( oh did I say I;) I meant to say he) In life we need to find every source of inspiration we can. Strive to improve and take joy in our accomplishments regardless of how small they may seem.

To me life is about becoming a better person, a better father and husband and above all building, basing, converting and painting that one piece where people will go that is so cool....after all a little admiration goes a long way

I think I can live with the bronze. Looks nice in my cabinet anyway :)

As for foreign entries into the demons, bring it on. If you can\'t stand the heat, get out of the bowels of Khazad-dum.

I believe I\'m in the same frame of mind as Steve on this issue: if it were mine, I\'d be mildly annoyed but not fuming or losing sleep. It\'s a murkier situation than if this second figure had actually been the original sold and re-entered under the new owner\'s name.

It doesn\'t surprise me that this happened at all, however. Games Workshop in particular highly encourages duplication of paint schemes. In a previous edition of the 40k game, they had stated that any variations in a Space Marine chapter\'s colours meant that it could not even officially be played as that chapter (though I haven\'t played in years, I believe they\'ve eased up on this restriction since).

In addition, when a painter is presented with a new concept or technique, attempting to replicate it is one of the best ways to master it. Various painting tutorials more often than not state categorically even which specific paints were used for each stage; this, too, encourages copying a paint scheme. For a new artist who has not yet nurtured his or her own individuality, I could easily see where they might believe that becoming a better painter means to copy those who are better than you.

What I feel is questionable here is the copycat entering an obvious duplicate paint scheme in a contest; and the same type of contest that the original had actually placed, at that! Certainly audacious, but if this were, for example, a Space Wolf character where a colour scheme is essentially pre-determined, would there still be the same questions? Where are the lines drawn for a painter\'s intellectual property?

I certainly don\'t approve of what this guy did. At best, it shows a lack of creativity and an obvious lack of knowledge on the judge\'s parts.

It shouldn\'t have come anywhere near winning a GD - simple as that! It would be bad enough having the same miniature winning demon after demon, let alone the same paint job. As for the painter - CHOP THEIR GOOLIES OFF and let that be a lesson! (if they\'re a boy....):D

I absolutely agree with everything Goatman has said about the French coming to Germany, the booing :|~ and all that stuff.
I for one was very happy to see all that amazing stuff by the French, Germans, Austrians, ... in person and I really hope next year will be as good or even better (hey Peter, maybe the British should come again ;) )

To add a litle to the rant about the German GD, I really dislike the fact that entries are not anonymous...

I don\'t think I understand... You mean the entries aren\'t name-labelled in the showcases? Or giving out the awards like: \"Gold goes to: Skaven Command group!\" with no names given? I can imagine the painters themself wouldn\'t like this one too much... if you\'re going to pick up an award, you at least want someone to catch your name (pro painters all the more so... publicity and all...). And the names would certainly be given in White Dwarf and/or the GW homepage...

No no, this is a misunderstanding. What I don\'t like is that the judges know the name of the painter when judging, because the labels are lying right next to the entries. Revealing the names after all the judging is done might be better in my opinion.

if the uk demons are any indication, they don\'t know the names of the entrants. The entries get a number, and then the numbers of the winners get checked in the archive to who\'s entry it is for the ceremony....would be unfair otherwise...

Judges knowing who has painted what is certainly a bad idea.
As for the copied colour scheme my view is that if it was copied and posted here then so what.Copying it and entering it in a comp is \"quite ungentlemanly\".I think the judges could have been a bit more astute, surely it rang some bells somewhere.Sure its a great paintjob just lacking creativity.
When I paint I always look to see what others have done for ideas and inspiration.I always try to do my own thing in the end though.

I would be very interested in what the \"guilty\" party has to say on the matter.

Names...

@tammy: I\'m afraid the brit method hasn\'t yet arrived to German GD. Actually, the individual minis in the showcase are standing on the according entry form (or whatever you call that bit of paper you have to fill out when entering a mini...)
