How to achieve a desaturated paint!

I really enjoy those soft desaturated minis you see on this site every now and then, and was wondering how that is achieved. Did some searching around the interwebs and found this nice forum thread talking about it, it's not really for miniature, but color is color and would work the same, so I thought I would share it as it gave me some insight into the subject.

The jest of it is you can add some grays or a bit of the colors complementary to get that cool desaturated look.

Was wondering what some of you awesome artist on this forum have to share and say on the subject?

adding grey and/or complementary is pretty much it.

Except if you go the lazy way and buy the premixed, already desaturated colors. :)

Speaking towards the lazy route, Vallejo makes some great pastels in their model color line. Put a light wash over it and it may achieve the effect you're after.
