?? How to achieve a fast frost effect??

so, I'm making a diorama with a dynamic winter spell affect taking place on the diorama.

I've never attempted this and I've not seen many (or any) examples of a flash frost/ice spell effect taking place such that figures look frozen.

Anyone have any ideas of how one can achieve this? The affected area will be a few miniatures spaces a few inches apart and a few inches away from the source of the spell.

I tried a few different methods on some test pieces

1. Made a mold out of aluminium foil an green stuff, then placed the figure inside and poured tinted two part resin inside. Didn't like this as the figures were in a nice block of ice but it was too much of a frozen affect.
2. Wiped water effects across the figure to make it seem like they were in an ice storm but the effects looked too much like water and too smooth. Not frigid looking.
3. Took a painted figure and spot sprayed with white primer in a zenithal light technique and then glazed lightly with blue paints. This looked decent (with a little icicles and snow added) but its kind of hit or miss.

Just wondering if anyone has any additional ideas to create a flash freeze ice spell affect on some miniatures.

Good? Indeed.
To me? Not really.

What I'm looking for is a quick freeze affect on an already painted mini. I have minis slightly converted in a dynamic pose and when I'm finished painting them, I want to apply/paint something to simulate them being in the process of being frozen.

So, Darkmessiah, tell us a little more about this work of yours. The square plinth looks phenomenal.

Arh, so thats what ur looking to do! didnt realise! Id use a 2 part clear epoxy glue, u can get it i most hardware stores (just make sure u get the 5 min setting one, not the 8 hr one ;). it sets very clear and rock hard, but before it gets their it goes quite rubbery, which means it can be shaped and u can cut angles in to it. if u build up a few layers of that i think it be idealu can see some of the epoxy on the base of the tree and i used it to make icicles for this guy

as for the square base it was for this viking guy, more of a test base for the ice effects really, am gunna rebase him as i dont think it quite works

The ice effect is acheived by melting a semi opaque wax, paraffin wax. U cut shavings off and melt em, the more layers u build the less transparent it gets not too difficult tbh!

as for more of my stuff check out my Wip at Platoon Britannica :)

You could use the Medusa effect? 3 figures vs a Medusa, one is painted normally & is attacking, one is painted as a stone statue, the third, who is looking directly at the Medusa is just turning to stone. Grey paint from feet to waist, normal colours above.

For your frost magic, any area the frost "beam" is hitting goes icy blue, the effect spreading out from that point.

I think paint is the simplest way to represent frozen characters.

Next would be painting as normal & then encasing in an oblong of clear water effect like an ice cube or Gelatinous Cube, http://www.otherworld.me.uk/dmseries2.html scroll down to DM16c & click on picture.

Representing the actual bolt of freezing magic is a whole other area. I've seen magic effects done but rarely well & I'd suggest trying to make the scene work without it.

Cheers, B.

I've achieved a look similar to that on the bases by using Reaper's Anti-Shine additive. I assume most additives meant to matte down paints would have a similar effect. People always complain about matting agent frosting if used too much, so I figured when I wanted frost, try that. You could possibly dab it on the minis to freeze parts of them, but I think you'd also need something painted like BPI's icy blue spreading out to really sell the effect to a quick viewing.

I have *acheived* a frosted effect with too much GW matt sealer. Try spraying way too much matt varnish on a piece of card board or something. It looks like hoar frost. $0.02

magno;
Woodland scenics do Water Effects material which is used to simulate waterfalls. basically you put a small amount on a piece of Placticard (Sytrene sheet) and string it out to form lines like water streams/icicles. Allow to dry overnight and then glue to model horizontally.
For Snow speckles try stippling (Very Lightly) Matt Varnish then while still wet hold parrallel to the desk surface and sprinkle with snow effects. Blow off excess.
