what effect are you trying to achieve?

The spongy stuff is good for trees and shrubs, (but not great for turf) - make a wire frame (add additional texture and paint) and put a bit of tacky glue on the wires and dip it in the foliage. Shake off excess. Let set overnight. Spray with DulCoat to help fix it to the tree.

What I have had good luck with is taking a piece of foam rubber (like the piece that comes in the mini blister) and painting it green. Then taking a sharp insturment and scraping/tearing off little bits. Then with just a little glue stick them back together. Try having some different shades of green towards the outside.

Not sure what its called outside of Oz but I use scotch bright (Green thingy used for scrubbing so Im told). Fold it and stick it to a base then dry brush and use knife or whatever to rough it up to desired look. Will post a pic when I get back home if you like.
