How to drill a partial hole in bottom of a base like this?

i've been trying to drill an indentation so i can fit a piece of metal, since this base will sit on a wooden base that has magnets in it (for a larger model to sit on, and thus have a bit of stability).

I've been using hand drills and clippers trying to gouge out the quarter sized holes and it's been painful and taking too long.

Is there a tool to do this?

here is image. the holes should be about the depth of a quarter and about that deep (ie. NOT all the way through)

I am a bit confused ...are you trying to drill the hole in the metal? Usually you would need a mill to machine a hole that size into the metal (unless there is a drill bit that size you could chuck into a drill press). Can you provide a mock up of what you are trying to do? If I could see your concept I might be able to provide an alternative way to accomplish it.

It would be far easier to drill into the wood base and set the magnets flush into the wood, then just let the magnets hold the wood to the metal.

Its a resin base. Imagine if i wanted to add 2 rare earth magnets to the bottom of the base? you would drill 2 small holes, a drop of glue, and drop 2 magnets into the holes.
the holes would NOT go all the way through so that the magnets would sit in the depressions.

Now instead of a small magnet, i need 2 larger depressions. If i had a drill that had a bit that was almost an inch in diameter i could use that. Are there any machines that have wider bits that i could use to grind out a small depression?

I used this bit for my not-dremel to carve out a hole in the bottom of my Tantalus for a GW flying stand. If you drill a starter hole with a regular, biggish drill bit you can use the bit pictured to expand it out sideways, allowing for you to make all kinds of shapes (or just making the hole bigger).

Of course there are. Either try to find some kind of workshop, or visit a hardware store. You can get one-inch drill bits.

Drill press & Flat edged Forstner bit. Or hand drill if you're brave enough.
Mark depth you want with masking tape of flat of drill. Dead easy!

You'll still have an extra deep area where the center pilot is, but if it pokes through, you could seal it back up with a dab of green stuff.
